Police brutality on Tis Hazari lawyers: HC orders FIR, CBI assisted inquiry, suspension of police and Ex-gratia compensation

The bench said Justice Garg will be assisted by directors of CBI, Vigilance and Intelligence Bureau or any other senior officers appointed by them. The court also directed to register FIR and statements of the victims u/s 161 to be recorded. Further directed ex-gratia compensation to three lawyers for Rs 50 thousand, Rs 25 thousand and Rs 10 thousand. On Sunday Delhi High Court ordered the transfer of Special Commissioner of Delhi Police Sanjay Singh and Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Harinder Singh at a special hearing at 1P.M following Saturday’s police brutality on lawyers at the Tis Hazari courts and appointed retired justice S P Garg to conduct a judicial enquiry within six weeks.

After taking Suo motu cognizance on a media report by a vacation bench of Chief Justice DN Patel and Justice C Hari Shankar in a special mentioning case, in which 29 persons were injured including three advocates who suffered gunshot wounds on 2nd November, the Delhi High Court on Sunday ordered the transfer of Special Commissioner of Delhi Police Sanjay Singh and Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Harinder Singh at a special hearing at 1P.M following Saturday’s police brutality on lawyers at the Tis Hazari courts and appointed retired justice S P Garg to conduct a judicial enquiry within six weeks.

The court also directed to register FIR and statements of the victims u/s 161 to be recorded. Further directed ex-gratia compensation to three lawyers for Rs 50 thousand, Rs 25 thousand and Rs 10 thousand. The court also directed the Police Commissioner to take immediate action with regard to suspension of Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) Kanta Prasad, who allegedly dragged an advocate inside the lock up and beat him up, and ASI Pawan, who allegedly fired at the lawyers.
