Coronavirus: As the effect of coronavirus turned deadly, India has requested China to permit over 250 Indian students stuck in Wuhan, the epicentre of the new SARS-like virus, to leave the city. Authorities have prevented anyone from leaving Wuhan where the viral outbreak has so far infected nearly 1,300 people and killed 41 others. While the majority of the Indian students left for home on Chinese New Year holidays, over 250 to 300 students are said to be still in the city and its surrounding areas. Besides the students, the fast-spreading virus has become a major worry for their parents back home.

ICICI Bank: ICICI Bank on January 25 reported an over two-fold rise in its consolidated net profit at Rs 4,670 crore for the December quarter. It had posted a consolidated net profit of Rs 1,874.33 crore in the corresponding three months of the previous fiscal. On a standalone basis, its net profit jumped to Rs 4,146 crore during the December 2019 quarter from Rs 1,605 crore in the year-ago period.
Fiscal deficit: The country’s fiscal deficit for 2019-20 is expected to widen to 3.8 percent and the upcoming Budget may set a target of 3.5 percent for 2020-21, a report said on January 24. The first full-year Budget of the current government which will be presented on February 1, will focus on reviving consumption demand through base-level income tax cuts, interest subvention for small and medium businesses and housing.
Budget 2021: The government is going to set Rs one trillion target from disinvestment in the Budget for 2020-21 “The government is likely to bring down their stake in certain public sector undertakings (PSUs) to below 51 percent. In the absence of the BPCL disinvestment not going through in FY20, it would be the major sale in FY21 along with Air India. Additionally, they may announce policies/measures for the monetization of assets of public sector entities. Such a measure would mean creating a framework for asset monetization which involves the structures to be followed like auctioning or any other kind of bidding process”, a report on Budget expectations by CARE Ratings said.
