MUSLIM WOMEN: Islamic texts do not prohibit entry of women into mosques for offering Namaz and all fatwas that contradict this tenet should be ignored, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board has told the Supreme Court in an affidavit. The Muslim Personal Law Board said Muslim women were free to enter a mosque for prayers but underlined that it was not obligatory on women, unlike men, to offer Friday prayers in congregation.

EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT: The European Parliament on Wednesday decided to put off a vote on a resolution critical of India’s Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) to a session beginning on March 2, a move that is being seen as linked to the upcoming India-EU Summit next month. This proposal was voted down by a majority of the 483 MEPs present in the House. The European People’s Party (EPP) Group, the largest group in the Parliament that is backing the resolution, said the debate should go ahead as scheduled but voting should be postponed to the session beginning on March 2. This proposal was accepted by a vote of 271 to 199.

JU(D) EXPULSION: The JD (U) said Kishor and Varma were expelled from the party for their “anti-party” line and “derogatory” remarks against Nitish Kumar. The sackings seemed imminent after Kumar’s recent declaration that the two were “free to leave”.Varma had written an open letter to Kumar a few days ago seeking “ideological clarity” and opposed the JD(U)’s alliance with the BJP for Delhi assembly polls. Kishor too had questioned the decision to contest the Delhi assembly elections in alliance with the BJP and opposed the party line on different issues, including support to the CAA.

BREXIT: The European Parliament on Wednesday voted overwhelmingly to approve the Brexit deal with London, clearing the final hurdle for Britain’s departure from the EU. The vote at the parliament in Brussels, which came after an emotional debate, was passed by 621 to 49, prompting MEPs to burst into a chorus of “Auld Lang Syne”, a traditional Scottish song of farewell.

FAKE ROBO CALL: The US has filed lawsuits against five companies and three individuals allegedly responsible for making hundreds of millions of fake robocalls to American consumers from abroad, mostly from India, and causing massive financial losses to the elderly and the vulnerable. Seeking a restraining order against such call centers and robocalls, the Department of Justice in its class-action lawsuit alleged that the companies were warned many times not to place fraudulent robocalls including government and business-imposter calls yet they continued to do so and facilitated foreign-based fraud schemes targeting Americans.

CORONA VIRUS: IndiGo and Air India on Wednesday announced the suspension of their flights to China , while India has requested China for permission to operate two flights to bring back its nationals from Hubei province which has been sealed after the deadly coronavirus outbreak.

CORONA CURE: The Ministry of Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, Sowa Rigpa and Homoeopathy (AYUSH) on Wednesday issued an advisory and recommended that homeopathic and Unani medicine could be effective in the prevention of novel coronavirus (nCoV) infections which claimed over 130 lives in China.

ABORTIONTIME EXTENDED: The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved extending the upper limit for permitting abortions from the present 20 weeks to 24 weeks under Medical Termination of Pregnancy (Amendment) Bill, 2020 to amend the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act, 1971.

SAINA NAWAL: Former world number one badminton player Saina Nehwal joined the Bharatiya Janata Party on Wednesday, hailing Prime Minister Narendra Modi as an ‘inspiration’ with his ‘hard work’ for the country. Joining the party at a ceremony at its headquarters in New Delhi, Nehwal, 29, said the BJP has been doing ‘a lot of good’, and she would work to do her bit as its member.
