| সার্দ্ধ দ্বিশত বৎসর পূর্ব্বে এক দিন মাঘ মাসের রাত্রিশেষে এক খানি যাত্রীর নৌকা গঙ্গাসাগর হইতে প্রত্যাগমন করিতেছিল। পর্ত্তুগিস নাবিক দস্যুদিগের ভয়ে যাত্রীর নৌকা দলবদ্ধ হইয়া যাতায়াত করাই তৎকালের প্রথা ছিল; কিন্তু এই নৌকারোহীরা সঙ্গিহীন। তাহার কারণ এই যে রাত্রিশেষে ঘোরতর কুজ্ঝটিকা দিগন্ত ব্যাপ্ত করিয়াছিল; নাবিকেরা দিঙ্নিরূপণ করিতে না পারিয়া বহর হইতে দূরে পড়িয়াছিল। এক্ষণে কোন্ দিকে কোথায় যাইতেছে তাহার কিছুই নিশ্চয় ছিল না। নৌকারোহিগণ কেহ কেহ নিদ্রা যাইতেছিলেন, এক জন প্রাচীন এবং এক জন যুবা পুরুষ এই দুই জন মাত্র জাগ্রৎ অবস্থায় ছিলেন। প্রাচীন যুবকের সহিত কথোপকথন করিতেছিলেন। বারেক কথাবার্ত্তা স্থগিত করিয়া বৃদ্ধ নাবিকদিগকে জিজ্ঞাসা করিলেন, “মাঝি, আজ কত দূর যেতে পারবি?” মাঝি কিছু ইতস্ততঃ করিয়া বলিল, “বলিতে পারিলাম না৷” বৃদ্ধ ক্রুদ্ধ হইয়া মাঝিকে তিরস্কার করিতে লাগিলেন। যুবক কহিলেন, “মহাশয়, যাহা জগদীশ্বরের হাত, তাহা পণ্ডিতে বলিতে পারে না–ও মূর্খ কি প্রকারে বলিবে? আপনি ব্যস্ত হইবেন না৷” বৃদ্ধ উগ্রভাবে কহিলেন, “ব্যস্ত হব না? বল কি, বেটারা দু দুশ বিঘার ধান কাটিয়া লইয়া গেল, ছেলেপিলে সম্বৎসর খাবে কি?” এ সংবাদ তিনি সাগরে উপনীত হইলে পরে পশ্চাদাগত অন্য যাত্রীর মুখে পাইয়াছিলেন। যুবা কহিলেন, “আমি ত পূর্বেই বলিয়াছিলাম, মহাশয়ের বাটীতে অভিভাবক আর কেহ নাই–মহাশয়ের আসা ভাল হয় নাই৷” প্রাচীন পূর্ববৎ উগ্রভাবে কহিলেন, “আসব না? তিন কাল গিয়ে এক কালে ঠেকেছে। এখন পরকালের কর্ম করিব না ত কবে করিব?” যুবা কহিলেন, “যদি শাস্ত্র বুঝিয়া থাকি, তবে তীর্থদর্শনে যেরূপ পরকালের কর্ম হয়, বাটী বসিয়াও সেরূপ হইতে পারে৷” বৃদ্ধ কহিলেন, “তবে তুমি এলে কেন?” যুবা উত্তর করিলেন, “আমি ত আগেই বলিয়াছি যে, সমুদ্র দেখিব বড় সাধ ছিল, সেইজন্যই আসিয়াছি৷” পরে অপেক্ষাকৃত মৃদু স্বরে কহিতে লাগিলেন, “আহা! কি দেখিলাম! জন্মজন্মান্তরেও ভুলিব না। | Nearly two hundred and fifty years have passed away since the grey hours of one Magh morning saw a passenger-boat making her way up the river on her voyage back from the Saugor Islands. It was usual at that time for such boats to sail in strong parties on account of the scare of the Portuguese and other pirates. But these passengers had no companion-boats. The reason was that a thick fog had overspread the horizon towards the latter part of the night. The crew, having lost their bearings, drifted a far long way from the little flotilla. Now there was no knowing which direction she was making for. Most of the people on board were asleep. Only an old man and a youth lay awake, the former conversing with the latter. The former for a moment broke off and addressed one of the crew: “Boatman, what distance can you cover this day?” “I can hardly say” replied the boatman after a short indecision. The interrogator took offence and began railing at the boatman. “What is in the hands of Providence, Sir” chipped in the youth, “can’t be foretold by the wise, far less by a simpleton. You must not bother over that.” “Not bother!” echoed back the other furiously. “What do you mean? The fellows forcibly cut away paddy from some twenty odd bighas of my land and what my children would live upon the whole year?” This news he received from the fresh arrivals not before he had come out to the Saugor Islands. “So I observed already” rejoined the youngman, “when you have none other guardian left home, it was wrong of you to venture out.” “Not venture!” snapped the old man as sharply as before. “Three quarters of my life have been spent and only the fourth is left. Now or never to work for one’s next life.” “If I have read the scriptures aright,” added the youth, “the merits of pilgrimages accruing to after-life are equally within the reach of those who stay at home.” “Why did you stir out then?” returned the old man. “So I told you at the very outset”, replied the other, “I had a great mind to have a look at the sea. So I came”. Then he exulted half to himself “Ah! what a sight! This is never to be forgotten in ages of the soul’s migrations”. |

৯৯৭ বঙ্গাব্দের নিদাঘশেষে একদিন একজন অশ্বারোহী পুরুষ বিষ্ণুপুর হইতে মান্দারণের পথে একাকী গমন করিতেছিলেন। দিনমণি অস্তাচলগমনোদ্যোগী দেখিয়া অশ্বারোহী দ্রুতবোগে অশ্ব সঞ্চালন করিতে লাগিলেন। কেন না, সম্মুখে প্রকাণ্ড প্রান্তর; কি জানি, যদি কালধর্ম্মে প্রদোষকালে প্রবল ঝটিকা বৃষ্টি আরম্ভ হয়, তবে সেই প্রান্তরে, নিরাশ্রয়ে যৎপরোনাস্তি পীড়িত হইতে হইবে। প্রান্তর পার হইতে না হইতেই সূর্য্যাস্ত হইল; ক্রমে নৈশ গগন নীলনীরদমালায় আবৃত হইতে লাগিল। নিশারম্ভেই এমন ঘোরতর অন্ধকার দিগন্তসংস্থিত হইল যে, অশ্বচালনা অতি কঠিন বোধ হইতে লাগিল। পান্থ কেবল বিদ্যুদ্দীপ্তিপ্রদর্শিত পথে কোন মতে চলিতে লাগিলেন।
অল্পকাল মধ্যে মহারবে নৈদাঘ ঝটিকা প্রধাবিত হইল, এবং সঙ্গে সঙ্গে প্রবল বৃষ্টিধারা পড়িতে লাগিল। ঘোটকারূঢ় ব্যক্তি গন্তব্য পথের আর কিছুমাত্র স্থিরতা পাইলেন না। অশ্ববল্গা শ্লথ করাতে অশ্ব যথেচ্ছ গমন করিতে লাগিল। এইরূপ কিয়দ্দূর গমন করিলে ঘোটকচরণে কোন কঠিন দ্রব্যসংঘাতে ঘোটকের পদস্খলন হইল। ঐ সময়ে একবার বিদ্যুৎ প্রকাশ হওয়াতে পথিক সম্মুখে প্রকাণ্ড ধবলাকার কোন পদার্থ চকিতমাত্র দেখিতে পাইলেন। ঐ ধবলাকার স্তূপ অট্টালিকা হইবে, এই বিবেচনায় অশ্বারোহী লাফ দিয়া ভূতলে অবতরণ করিলেন। অবতরণমাত্র জানিতে পারিলেন যে, প্রস্তরনির্মিত সোপানাবলীর সংস্রবে ঘোটকের চরণ স্খলিত হইয়াছিল; অতএব নিকটে আশ্রয়স্থান আছে জানিয়া, অশ্বকে ছাড়িয়া দিলেন। নিজে অন্ধকারে সাবধানে সোপানমার্গে পদক্ষেপ করিতে লাগিলেন। অচিরাৎ তড়িদালোকে জানিতে পারিলেন যে, সম্মুখস্থ অট্টালিকা এক দেবমন্দির। In a short time, the winds began to roar, accompanied by heavy rain. The horseman was now absolutely incapable of distinguishing his course. The reins were now slackened, and the animal went his own way. After going some distance in this manner, the charger stumbled at some hard substance. As the lightning played just then, the traveller caught a glimpse of some gigantic white object before him. Taking it to be a building, he jumped to the ground, and came to know that some stone stairs had occasioned the accident. Hence concluding shelter to be at hand, he let his horse loose, and in darkness cautiously began to ascend the flight of steps. By the help of the lightning he soon ascertained that the pile before him was a temple.
