CTBTO Executive Secretary Lassina Zerbo on unusual seismic event detected in DPRK – 09/09/2016

Our monitoring stations picked up an unusual seismic event in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) today at 00:30 (UTC). So far 25 of our stations are contributing to the analysis. The event seems to have been slightly larger than the one our system recorded on 6 January this year and the location is very similar to that event. Our initial location estimate shows that the event took place in the area of the DPRK’s nuclear test site.

Defense Policy of China-2009

China pursues a national defense policy which is purely defensive in nature. China places the protection of national sovereignty, security, territorial integrity, safeguarding of the interests of national development, and the interests of the Chinese people above all else. China endeavors to build a fortified national defense and strong military forces compatible with national security and development interests, and enrich the country and strengthen the military while building a moderately prosperous society in all aspects.

India and China both deployed around 50,000 to 60,000 troops along the high-altitude line of actual control-11/01/2022

Thus it was distracting at best and disruptive at worst for India to point an accusing finger at China just prior to the latest talks for what it called Chinese infrastructure construction in areas under "illegal occupation by China". Such a move will not gain more bargaining power for New Delhi at the negotiation table, since these projects are in territory that are entirely under China's sovereignty. Instead it will only create unnecessary trouble and hamper efforts to reach consensus.

Statement on the Nuclear Tests of Pakistan and India-28/05/1998

We urge Pakistan and India to refrain from further tests and the deployment of nuclear weapons or ballistic missiles, in order to prevent the escalation of tensions and a nuclear arms race. It is increasingly urgent that both India and Pakistan adhere unconditionally to the Non-Proliferation Treaty and the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty and enter into negotiations on a global treaty to stop the production of fissile material for nuclear weapons. We further urge India and Pakistan to engage in a dialogue which addresses the root causes of the tension between them, and to try to build confidence, rather than seek confrontation.
