The Prize in Economic Sciences is not a Nobel Prize. In 1968, Sveriges Riksbank (Sweden’s central bank) instituted “The Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel”, and it has since been awarded by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences according to the same principles as for the Nobel Prizes that have been awarded since 1901.

Sveriges Riksbank’s Prize in Economic Sciences was established in connection with the Riksbank’s 300th anniversary in 1968. The prize is awarded every year to a person or persons in the field of economic sciences who have produced work of outstanding importance.
The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences appoints the prize-winner(s) according to the same principles as for the Nobel Prizes. The prize amount is also the same as for the Nobel Prizes, 10 million, and is paid by the Riksbank. If there is more than one winner, the prize amount is shared equally between them.
The prize has been awarded every year since 1969. [Riksbank]
Assar Lindbeck (1985), Chairman of the Economics prize committee for over a decade till the mid-1990s, employed a five-fold classification (basic economic theory, theoretical contributions concerning specific sectors, new methods of economic analysis, pure empirical research and non-formalized innovative thinking). Subsequently, Lindbeck (NFW) adopted a more generic classification (general equilibrium, macroeconomics, microeconomics, interdisciplinary research and new methods of economic analysis).
Only 12 universities have been associated with three or more awards. These include: University of Chicago, Harvard University , University of Cambridge , University of California, Berkeley, Columbia University , Princeton University , MIT , Stanford University and Yale University.
