The University Grants Commission (UGC) has released the “Promotion of Equity in Higher Education Institutions” Regulations, 2026, aimed at eradicating discrimination based on religion, race, caste, gender, place of birth, or disability. This regulation applies to all Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in India, promoting equity and inclusion as outlined in the National Education Policy, 2020. HEIs must establish Equal Opportunity Centres and Equity Committees to oversee compliance, promote awareness, and support disadvantaged groups. A 24/7 Equity Helpline and strict monitoring by the UGC are instituted to ensure adherence, with penalties for non-compliance potentially affecting institutional recognition and funding.
