On Sunday, December 20, the President of Nepal Bidya Devi Bhandari has approved the recommendation of the Council of Ministers under Article 76 (1) and (7) and Article 85 of the constitution of Nepal and dissolved the Parliament. A statement issued by president declared fresh elections to be held in two rounds on April 30 and on May 10.
The decision came in the wake of deepening crisis within the ruling Nepal Communist Party. “The prime minister has lost the majority in the parliamentary party, central committee and the secretariat of the party,” said Bishnu Rijal, a Central Committee member of the NPC. Nepal’s House of Representatives, elected in 2017 with its 275 members. The next general election in the Himalayan country was due in 2022.
