It is a positive duty of the jews people to express the sanctity of the Sabbath day, for it is written: “Remember to sanctify the Sabbath day” (Exodus 20:8); that is to say, remember it in terms of praise and sanctification. One should remember it at its beginning and its conclusion by reciting the Kiddush when the Sabbath begins and the Havdalah when it ends.
Exodus 20:8-11
Remember the sabbath day and keep it holy.

Remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt and the LORD your God freed you from there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm; therefore the LORD your God has commanded you to observe the sabbath day.
Genesis 2:1-3

You shall keep the sabbath, for it is holy for you. He who profanes it shall be put to death: whoever does work on it, that person shall be cut off from among his kin.

Moses then convoked the whole Israelite community and said to them: These are the things that the LORD has commanded you to do:

You shall keep My laws and My rules, by the pursuit of which man shall live: I am the LORD.
Genesis 2:1-4
The heaven and the earth were finished, and all their array.

Such is the story of heaven and earth when they were created. When the LORD God made earth and heaven—
Genesis 2:2-3

And God blessed the seventh day and declared it holy, because on it God ceased from all the work of creation that He had done.
Numbers 15:32-36
Once, when the Israelites were in the wilderness, they came upon a man gathering wood on the sabbath day.
Those who found him as he was gathering wood brought him before Moses, Aaron, and the whole community.
He was placed in custody, for it had not been specified what should be done to him.
Then the LORD said to Moses, “The man shall be put to death: the whole community shall pelt him with stones outside the camp.”
So the whole community took him outside the camp and stoned him to death—as the LORD had commanded Moses.

but the seventh day is a sabbath of the LORD your God; you shall not do any work—you, your son or your daughter, your male or female slave, your ox or your ass, or any of your cattle, or the stranger in your settlements, so that your male and female slave may rest as you do.
Exodus 39:43
