Submarine Project: The defence ministry on January 21, selected two Indian shipyards and five foreign defence majors for the Rs 50,000 crore project to build six conventional submarines in India for the Navy besides approving military procurement worth Rs 5,100 crore. The shortlisted Indian entities to construct the submarines are the L&T group and state-owned Mazagaon Docks Ltd (MDL).

Ayodhya Case:  A curative petition was filed in  Ram Janambhoom-Babri Masjid land dispute case on January 21,  challenging the November 9 verdict which cleared the way for construction of a Ram Temple at the disputed site at Ayodhya. The curative petition filed by Mohammed Ayyub, President of the Peace Party of India.

Coronavirus: The Civil Aviation Ministry has ordered seven airports including Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, and Kolkata to make arrangements for the screening of passengers arriving from China in the state of the outbreak of an infection caused by a new strain of virus there. Thermal cameras will be installed at the pre-immigration areas of these airports and airline staff will bring the passengers to the health counters.  Airlines flying in from any airport in China including Hong Kong have been asked to make in-flight announcements requesting passengers with a history of fever and cough and travel to Wuhan city in the past 14 days to self-declare at the port of arrival in order to facilitate early isolation.

Delhi: The National Green Tribunal has commanded the Delhi government to remove illegal constructions in south Delhi’s Jaunapur and Dera Mandi forest areas, declaring that no encroachment can be allowed on forest land. A bench headed by  NGT Chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel said the monitoring has to be at a higher level so that the encroachments are removed and the land is restored to its original condition.

NPR: The Centre government today made it clear that the disclosure of information in the National Population Register (NPR) exercise is not mandatory but voluntary. Union Minister of State for Home G Kishan Reddy said, “Disclosure of information in NPR is voluntary only”, he also added since NPR is a constitutional obligation, the state governments should not oppose it.

Census 2021: The Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India (RGI)  said Sensus 2021 would be the first-ever census to be conducted with a mixed-mode approach – which is a  mobile app, created in-house by RGI office.”While confidentiality about your data is guaranteed by Census Act, 1948; the same law specifies penalty for BOTH public AND census officials for non-compliance or violation of any provision of the Act,” the RGI said.

Telecom industries: The Supreme Court on January 21 agreed to hear next week the fresh pleas of telecom firms, including Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea and Tata Teleservices, seeking a fresh schedule of payment of statutory dues to the tune of Rs 1.47 trillion to the Department of Telecommunications.

Bharti Airtel: The Department of Telecom has approved raising of foreign direct investment in Bharti Airtel to 100 percent, a stock exchange filing of the company said on January 21. The company also has the approval of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) that allowed foreign investors to hold up to a 74 percent stake in the company.

SDGs: India needs $2.64 trillion investment to meet the UN’s sustainable development goals (SDGs), offering the private sector an investment opportunity of over $1.12 trillion by 2030, according to a report. According to the Standard Chartered SDG Investment Map, the total investment that the country needs to make by 2030 is  $2,633.9 billion. Out of the total, $,558.8 billion is for clean energy, $505.5 billion for transport infrastructure, $377.4 billion for digital access; and $192.2 billion for clean water and sanitation.

Uber: Uber on January21 announced the sale of its food delivery business in India to Zomato in an all-stock deal. Uber will get a 9.9 percent stake in Zomato as part of the deal. The deal for Uber Eats, which operates in 41 cities, was signed at 3 am, and its customers will be shifted to the Zomato app from 7 am. The deal is applicable only in India and Uber Eats will continue to operate in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. According to sources the deal value is around $300- 350 million.
