Clarification on Recent Police Searches Conducted in India (Jan 15, 1947)
On January 14, searches were conducted across India, which some believed were ordered by the Government of India. However, the government clarified that these searches were carried out by the Police under their authority, following a request from Bombay Police related to an investigation involving a local newspaper.

The attention of the Government of India has been drawn to a news item stating that searches were conducted in many parts of India on the 14th January by direction of the Government of India.

In order to remove any misapprehension, the Government of India announce that the searches were not made under their order but in exercise by the Police of their powers under Section 165 of the Criminal Procedure Code, on a requisition made by the Bombay Police under Section 166 of the Criminal Procedure Code, in connection with investigation of a case instituted against a newspaper in Bombay.
