NATIONAL

RanBaxy: Former promoters of the Ranbaxy Malvinder and Shivinder Singh were arrested on October 10, for alleged Rs 740 crore fraud case.

Nobel Peace Prize: Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali was awarded the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize on October 11 for his peacemaking efforts with Eritrea.

WHO: On October 8, the World Health Organisation has launched its first report on vision. According to the report, nearly 2.2 billion people live with vision impairment or blindness globally, in which over one billion cases could have been prevented or have yet to be addressed.

Passenger vehicle sales: India’s passenger vehicle sales slumped 23.7 per cent in September, the eleventh straight month of declines, the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) data showed that sales dropped to 223,317 units in September.

Kerala Bank: On October 10, RBI has given its final approval of Kerala governmentโ€™s long-pending proposal of setting up its own โ€˜Kerala Bankโ€™, by amalgamating 13 district co-operative banks (DCBs) with Kerala State Co-operative Bank.

IntelliSmart :  EESL, NIIF joins hands to install smart electricity meters in all households in India.  The two companies have formed a joint venture called IntelliSmart Infrastructure Pvt Ltd (IntelliSmart) which will execute, finance and operate the smart meter program.
TCS: TCS posts weaker growth than expected; second quarter net is profit up 1.8% at Rs 8,042 cr.


INTERNATIONAL

EU: The European Union imposed tariffs as high as 66.4 per cent on steel road wheels from China, targeting manufacturers such as Zhejiang Jingu Co. and Xingmin Intelligent Transportation Systems Co.

Asia Pacific growth: Growth in developing East Asian and Pacific economies is expected to slow from 6.3 per cent last year to 5.8 per cent in 2019 and to 5.7 and 5.6 per cent in 2020 and 2021 respectively, reflecting a broad-based decline in export growth and manufacturing activity, the World Bank said on October 10.

Iran: Two rockets struck an Iranian tanker travelling through the Red Sea off the coast of Saudi Arabia on October 11, Iranian officials said. The tanker, owned by National Iranian Oil Company, had suffered heavy damage and was leaking oil into the Red Sea some 60 miles from Jeddah.


SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

On October 10, Union Science and Technology Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan launched a disaster warning device and satellite based Gagan Enabled Marinerโ€™s Instrument for Navigation and Information (GEMINI) system. It will help provide information related to disaster warnings when fishermen move away from the coast beyond 10 to 12 kilometers, Potential Fishing Zones (PFZ) and Ocean States Forecasts (OSF) to fishermen.
