Gaza Humanitarian Crisis: As the 30-day deadline set by the Biden administration for Israel to improve the humanitarian situation in Gaza passed, the U.S. State Department confirmed on Tuesday that it does not plan to reduce military aid to Israel. This decision comes despite the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where the conflict has left over two million residents in increasingly dire conditions. Many families have been displaced, and access to essential services such as healthcare, clean water, and food is severely limited, raising urgent questions about the effectiveness of international diplomacy. Nonetheless, the administration remains committed to its strategic partnership with Israel, emphasizing the need for a balanced approach that addresses both security concerns and the pressing humanitarian needs of the Palestinian people. The situation continues to evoke strong reactions from human rights organizations and international observers who advocate for a reevaluation of foreign policy in light of these humanitarian concerns.
Biden Administration’s 30-Day Ultimatum Falls Short
On October 13, Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken and Defense Secretary Lloyd J. Austin III issued a letter to Israel, warning that the United States would reassess its weapons aid if the humanitarian aid allowed into Gaza did not increase significantly within 30 days. The letter highlighted the deteriorating conditions in Gaza, stating that aid deliveries had dropped by 50% since April.
However, as of the deadline, the Biden administration has not implemented any changes to its military support for Israel. Vedant Patel, a State Department spokesperson, acknowledged that while Israel had taken some steps to meet the U.S. demands, they were insufficient to address the critical needs in Gaza.
Dire Humanitarian Situation in Gaza: A Looming Catastrophe
The humanitarian crisis in Gaza continues to escalate. U.N. officials have accused Israel of obstructing aid deliveries and targeting humanitarian workers, actions that may constitute violations of international law. Food insecurity experts, collaborating with U.N. bodies and major relief agencies, have warned that famine is imminent or already underway in northern Gaza. The entire population of Gaza, they say, is grappling with severe food shortages and malnutrition.
Despite these alarming reports, aid workers note that the volume of supplies entering Gaza remains far below the necessary levels. While Israel reopened the Erez crossing into northern Gaza and opened a new crossing, these measures fall short of the U.S. demand for 350 aid trucks per day. Currently, only 40 to 50 trucks are reaching southern Gaza daily, with very few making it to the north.
U.S. Aid to Israel Under Scrutiny Amid Human Rights Concerns
By law, the U.S. government is prohibited from providing military aid to foreign forces that commit “gross violations of human rights.” The continued military support for Israel, despite the deteriorating situation in Gaza, has sparked criticism from human rights advocates and members of the international community.
Ilze Brands Kehris, the U.N. Assistant Secretary-General for Human Rights, reported to the U.N. Security Council that nearly 70% of casualties in Gaza since the conflict began are women and children, with children aged 5 to 9 being the most affected. The lack of adequate aid and the targeting of civilian areas have led to accusations that Israel’s actions could amount to war crimes.
Joyce Msuya, the U.N.’s acting humanitarian chief, emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating that October saw a nearly 25% decrease in daily food distribution compared to the previous month. She warned that “conditions of life across Gaza are unfit for human survival,” urging the international community to intervene before it is too late.
International Pressure and U.S. Domestic Backlash
The U.S. stance on continuing weapons aid to Israel comes amid growing pressure from international organizations and domestic political groups. Eight prominent aid agencies, including OXFAM and Save the Children, issued a joint statement condemning Israel’s failure to meet both U.S. criteria and international obligations to facilitate humanitarian assistance in Gaza.
The Biden administration is also facing backlash from progressive voters and Arab and Muslim American communities, many of whom have threatened to withhold their support in upcoming elections unless there is a shift in U.S. policy towards Israel. The administration’s decision not to reduce military aid may further strain its relationship with these key voter groups.
Calls for Reassessment of Military Aid
The call for a reassessment of military aid to Israel is gaining traction, particularly as the humanitarian toll in Gaza continues to mount. Senior U.N. officials have urged countries supplying weapons to the conflict, including the United States, to reconsider their support if it risks enabling serious violations of international law.
Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, acknowledged the critical need for a surge in humanitarian aid, warning that without immediate action, many residents of Gaza “may not survive the winter.”

As the conflict rages on, the humanitarian situation in Gaza shows no signs of improvement. The Biden administration’s decision to maintain military aid to Israel despite the 30-day deadline underscores the complexities of U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East. However, the growing calls for action from international organizations, human rights advocates, and segments of the U.S. electorate suggest that the pressure on Washington to reconsider its stance may continue to build in the coming weeks.
