Lesson 13 of 20: Health, Body Parts & At the Doctor/Pharmacy

After today you’ll be able to handle the most common medical situations in Greece-style: explain what hurts, buy medicine, understand the pharmacist, and even survive the public hospital if needed.

1. Body parts (the ones you’ll actually use)

2. Saying “it hurts” and “I feel …”

Πονάω = I have pain / it hurts Με πονάει + body part (accusative)

• Με πονάει το κεφάλι. → I have a headache.
• Με πονάει ο λαιμός. → I have a sore throat.
• Με πονάει η κοιλιά μου. → My stomach hurts.
• Πονάω παντού! → I hurt all over!

Έχω = I have (symptoms)

• Έχω πυρετό. → I have a fever.
• Έχω βήχα / μπούκωμα. → I have a cough / stuffy nose.
• Έχω αλλεργία. → I’m allergic.
• Έχω διάρροια / δυσκοιλιότητα. → I have diarrhea / constipation.

Νιώθω = I feel

• Νιώθω αδύναμος/αδύναμη. → I feel weak.
• Νιώθω ζαλάδα. → I feel dizzy.
• Νιώθω να κάνω εμετό. → I feel like vomiting.

Pharmacy You: Καλησπέρα. Με πονάει πολύ ο λαιμός μου και έχω πυρετό. Pharmacist: Από χθες; You: Ναι, και νιώθω πολύ κουρασμένος. Pharmacist: Πάρτε Strepsils για τον λαιμό και Depon για τον πυρετό. Πίνετε πολλά υγρά και ξεκουραστείτε.

Doctor / ER You: Γιατρέ, έφαγα θαλασσινά και τώρα έχω φαγούρα παντού και πρήξιμο. Doctor: Αλλεργία είναι. Θα σας κάνουμε μια ένεση κορτιζόνη αμέσως.

6. Homework (10 min)

1. Write 8 sentences about how you feel today (real or imaginary symptoms). Example: «Έχω λίγο πονοκέφαλο και με πονάει η πλάτη μου από τη δουλειά.»
2. Record yourself at the pharmacy asking for medicine for: – sore throat + fever – stomach ache after souvlaki – allergic reaction
3. Memorise the question: «Κάτι για τον … παρακαλώ;»
