Napoleon’s letter to the Israelites, 1799
From Napoleon Bonaparte,
Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces of the French Republic in Africa and Asia,
To the legitimate heirs of Palestine.
O Israelis, you unique people, whom the forces of conquest and tyranny could not rob of their lineage and national existence, even if they only robbed them of their ancestral land.
The observers of the destinies of people are conscious and impartial. Even if they did not have the ability of prophets like Isaiah and Joel, they would have realized what these people had predicted with their high faith, that the servants of God (the word Israel in the Hebrew language means the prisoner of God or the servant of God) would return to Zion singing, and they would be filled with happiness when they regained their kingdom without fear.
Rise up strong, you homeless people in the wilderness. Before you are a terrible war that your people are waging after their enemies considered their land, which they inherited from their ancestors, as spoils to be divided among them according to their whims. We must forget that shame that brought you under the yoke of slavery, that shame that paralyzed your will for two thousand years. Circumstances did not permit announcing or expressing your demands. Rather, these circumstances forced you to give up your rights.
Therefore, France is now extending its hand to you, carrying the legacy of Israel, and it is doing so at this particular time, despite evidence of despair and impotence.
The army with which Divine Providence has sent me, and which marches with victory before it and with justice behind it, has chosen Jerusalem as the headquarters of its leadership, and within a few days, it will move to neighboring Damascus, which has long underestimated and humiliated the City of David.
O legitimate heirs of Palestineโฆ The French nation, which does not trade in men and nations as others have done, calls upon you to preserve your inheritance by guaranteeing and supporting it against all intruders.
Rise up and show that the overwhelming power of tyrants has not dampened the courage of the descendants of these heroes, whose fraternal alliance was an honor to Sparta and Rome, and that the treatment of slaves that lasted two thousand years has not succeeded in killing this courage.
Hurry, this is the appropriate moment, which may not be repeated for thousands of years, to demand the restoration of your rights and your status among the peoples of the world, those rights that were taken from you for thousands of years. It is your political existence as a nation among nations, and your absolute natural right to worship your God, Jehovah, in accordance with your faith, and do so in public and do so forever.
Bonaparte
