Today, Panamanians commemorate a historic milestoneโ25 years of successfully managing the Panama Canal, a symbol of sovereignty and a pillar of global trade. Since its transfer on December 31, 1999, this interoceanic route has been expanded, modernized, and diversified, showcasing Panamaโs ability to operate it profitably while advancing sustainable development for the nation.
The symbolic ceremony, held on the steps of the Administration Building, was graced by President Josรฉ Raรบl Mulino, who reaffirmed the Canal’s importance, stating:
“The Canal continues to be our greatest symbol of sovereignty, and it will remain in our hands forever.”
Highlighting Panamaโs neutral stewardship, the president added:
“It is because of our neutral hands that nations trust us with such a strategic asset. Panama is committed to fostering a more connected world, promoting open trade, and enabling greater exchange of goods among countries.”
A Celebration of Achievement and Vision
The ceremony was attended by distinguished leaders, including Minister of Foreign Affairs Javier Martรญnez-Acha Vรกsquez, Vice Minister Carlos Ruรญz-Hernรกndez, and hundreds of citizens. Together, they celebrated the Canal’s efficient management, honored the generational struggle for sovereignty, and paid tribute to those who sacrificed for the nation’s cause.
Dr. Ricaurte Vรกsquez Morales, current administrator of the Canal, emphasized the importance of sustainable water management, calling the Rio Indio the most viable solution to water shortages crucial for Canal operations. Minister for Canal Affairs Josรฉ Ramรณn Icaza lauded the Canalโs achievements, noting that over 300,000 vessels have transited safely and efficiently under the Panamanian administration.
Recognizing Excellence
The contributions of the Canalโs workforce were highlighted during the event. Miguel Guerra, a dedicated employee for 25 years, was awarded the prestigious Order of Vasco Nรบรฑez de Balboa in the rank of Commander, symbolizing the collective effort of more than 8,000 collaborators.

The ceremony underscored the Panama Canal’s role as a national treasure and a testament to Panamanian diplomacy. The international solidarity garnered during the struggle for sovereignty remains a proud milestone in the country’s history.
