SIR H. COTTON I beg to ask the Secretary of State for India whether his attention has been called to an official answer given in the Legislative Council of Bengal, that a proposal has been made to appoint a European officer to be professor of Sanskrit in the Presidency College of Calcutta; and whether, seeing that this proposal has given rise to unfavourable comment in India, and is opposed to the popular, feeling in favour of employing properly qualified Indians to be teachers of Sanskrit in Government colleges, he will take steps to prevent the proposed appointment.
MR. MORLEY I understand from the Question and Answer to which the hon. Gentleman has referred me that a proposal to create a professorship of Sanskrit in the Presidency College, Calcutta, is under consideration by the Government of India. When the proposal is submitted for my sanction I will not neglect the point which the hon. Member raises.
DR. HAZEL (West Bromwich) I beg to ask the Secretary of State for India whether any proposal has reached him for the appointment of a European officer to be a professor of Sanskrit in the Presidency College at Calcutta; and whether, seeing that the general feeling in India is in favour of employing properly qualified Indians to be teachers of Sanskrit in the Government colleges, he will state what action he has taken, or proposes to take, in the matter of the above-mentioned appointment.

Member raises.
