MR. FAWCETT asked the Under Secretary of State for India, Whether the attention of the Secretary of State for India has been directed to a letter which appeared in “The Times” of April 15, from Mr. Cowell, Professor of Sanskrit in the University of Cambridge, referring to the abolition of the Professorship of Hindu Law in the Sanskrit College at Calcutta; and further, whether, under the circumstances of the case, the Secretary of State approves of the course which has been adopted; and, if not, whether he intends to take any action in the matter?
MR. GRANT DUFF replied that the attention of the Secretary of State had been called to the letter in question, and he proposed to ask for an explanation from the Government of India on the subject, for no official information had been received.
