Political parties were convened by President Orsi following the attack on the Supreme Court prosecutor
The Uruguayan president, Orsi, invited leaders of political parties with parliamentary representation, along with Minister of the Interior Carlos Negro, to a dialogue following the attack on Supreme Court prosecutor Mónica Ferrero, which took place on Sunday.
Those attending included Álvaro Delgado, representing the National Party; Andrés Ojeda, from the Colorado Party; Pablo Mieres, from the Independent Party; and Guido Manini Ríos and Ignacio Curbelo, from Cabildo Abierto. Also present were the president and vice president of the Broad Front, Fernando Pereira and Verónica Piñeiro.
In the morning, the President of the Republic, Yamandú Orsi, together with the Presidential Office team, held a meeting with the Minister of National Defense, Sandra Lazo, the Minister of the Interior, Carlos Negro, and Deputy Acting Prosecutor General Mónica Ferrero, who was the victim of the attack.
After the meeting, Negro reported that Ferrero was offered support, solidarity, and assistance — “first as a person and then as a prosecutor” — following the attack, and that every necessary measure would be taken to ensure her safety and that of her family.
Regarding the latest meeting, he stated that the goal was to give an institutional show of unity against any kind of violence coming from groups seeking to harm individuals or institutions. He added that the investigation into the attack on the prosecutor is ongoing, but declined to give details, noting that the information is confidential.
On the proposed amendments to the anti–money laundering law, he said that combating money laundering is the foundation of any strategy in the fight against drug trafficking. He agreed with President Yamandú Orsi’s statements, made earlier in the day during a press conference, emphasizing the need for Parliament to speed up the discussion of this initiative.
He also addressed the proposal included in the national budget to eliminate the specialized anti–money laundering prosecutor’s office, explaining that this approach follows “international manuals and best practices,” which recommend that money laundering cases be investigated in an integrated manner.

After the morning meeting, Orsi reiterated his “clear and firm” support for the prosecutor and for the Public Prosecutor’s Office as a whole, and expressed his appreciation to the police, whose work made it possible to identify some of those responsible, even though the investigation is still ongoing.
In a press conference, the president stated that the actions of drug trafficking organizations follow a recurring pattern, reviewed previous cases, and highlighted the significance of the fact that this time, the attack targeted the prosecutor’s home. “There are limits that we cannot allow to be crossed,” he affirmed.
He called on the parliamentary caucuses of all political parties to accelerate the discussion of the bill proposing amendments to Law No. 19,574 of December 20, 2017, on the Prevention of Money Laundering. He also urged a deep and serious debate on the matter to achieve better results.
