Shabar Mantra Practices in India: Written by Rascals for Exploitation

The Truth About Shabar Mantra: History, Misuse, and Why It Has No Place in Sanatan Dharma
North India and the Rise of Shabar Mantra
Shabar Mantra literature—sold today under names such as Shabar Tantra, Mantra Mahodadhi, Mantranrnava, Siddha Shabar Mantra and other “Shabar Mantra collections”—is often misleadingly attributed to divine or legendary figures like Shiva, Ravana, or the Nath yogi Gorakhnath in order to create artificial authority and spiritual legitimacy. In reality, these mantras did not arise from classical Vedic traditions, nor from respected Sanskrit scholars, nor from any authentic lineage of Sanatana Dharma. Historical evidence shows that most Shabar Mantras were composed between the 14th and 16th centuries by wandering folk practitioners—many of whom lacked formal education, had no grounding in Vedic knowledge, and freely mixed linguistic elements from rustic dialects, broken Sanskrit, and even Arabic or Persian. Their compositions formed a body of folk-magical formulas, not scriptural teachings.
“Shavar” originally referred to forest-dwelling tribes, yet the name became associated with crude, non-scholastic mantras written in a hybrid language. Over time, these texts developed into a market-driven genre promising quick results—love attraction, exorcism, money, success, revenge, healing, or removal of misfortune. Because these promises appealed to fear and desire, such practices spread widely, especially where people sought instant solutions to their problems.
Shabar Mantras have absolutely no connection with the historical Shabar or Savar (Pulind) community. This is an important point because many modern publishers and street-level “tantriks” deliberately exploit the similarity of the words Sabar and Shabar to create false authority. The real Shabar/Shavar community is a small ethnic group of North Indian origin that migrated into the region of present-day Bangladesh in the nineteenth century. They were traditionally nomads and hunters, and later settled in areas such as Harincharra, Rajghat, and Nandarani in the tea-garden zones of Maulavibazar. Today, their population in Bangladesh is barely around two to three thousand. They have no historical, cultural, or linguistic connection to the hybrid, folk-magical formulas called “Sabar Mantras.”
The examples commonly found in Shabar collections reveal their character clearly. They include formulas such as: –
Examples include so-called livelihood, attraction and exorcism mantras such as:
This is said to control another person’s mind by performing 11 malas on Diwali or an eclipse and performing 108 havan offerings.
There are also violent and threatening formulas labelled as “Hanuman Shabar Mantra,” such as:
These are accompanied by crude instructions like circling mustard seeds around someone’s head and burning them to “test” if the spell worked.
Another example is the सर्वकार्य सिद्धि formula:
to be chanted 11 times before leaving home for “success.”

For controlling young men and women

There are also mantras claiming to cure household issues, business obstacles, or emotional problems:
or rituals involving silver figurines, midnight ceremonies, mustard seeds, offerings, and threats directed at invisible entities. Such practices imitate religious structure but have no connection to legitimate scriptural procedure; most of the practitioners are psychopaths and half-educated.
Lists in Shabar books include material like:

Such content is presented as if it has miraculous authority, yet its structure clearly shows that it belongs to folk magic, not to Sanātana Dharma. The language mixes fragments of Sanskrit with everyday speech and foreign vocabulary, lacking grammatical coherence or philosophical foundation. These formulas were never part of any Vedic, Puranic, or Agamic tradition. They arose from social circumstances in which wandering practitioners—Hindu, Muslim, or mixed-background—experimented with charms, spells, and ritualistic threats, blending whatever cultural elements they encountered.
We have seen certain mantras in the name of Kamakhya Temple and the Kali of Kalighat Kali Temple, which are said to be used for female attraction or control (स्त्री-वशीकरण / नियंत्रण), such as—
It is equally important to clear another major confusion: Sabar / Shabar Mantras have absolutely no connection with the great Mimamsa scholar शबर स्वामी (Shabara Svāmi), the revered commentator on Jaimini’s Purva Mimamsa Sutras. His Shabara Bhāṣya, also known as जैमिनीय-मीमांसा-भाष्यम्, is one of the most profound and authoritative works in the entire history of Indian philosophy.
Shabara Swami, a towering intellectual of the 4th century BCE, was a master of logic, hermeneutics, grammar, linguistic precision and ritual philosophy. His commentary is foundational for the entire Mīmāṁsā tradition and deeply respected across all schools of classical Indian thought. The Shabara Bhāṣya is dense, systematic, scholarly and highly technical—an essential pillar in India’s philosophical literature.
There is absolutely no relationship whatsoever between this Shabara Swami and the so-called “Sabar Mantras.”
The similarity of the words Sabar, Shabar, Savar or Shavara is accidental. Unscrupulous practitioners and commercial publishers misuse the similarity to borrow legitimacy from a respected philosophical name. But:
- Shabara Swami was a rigorous philosopher.
- Sabar Mantras are unstructured folk-magic spells.
Their worlds could not be more different.
Shabara Swami’s work is a scholarly commentary with sophisticated arguments, while “Sabar Mantras” are crude, mixed-language formulas created centuries later (14th–16th century) by folk-tantric individuals, some Hindu, some Muslim, largely uneducated and outside all shastric traditions. They contain hybrid language—broken Sanskrit, rural dialects, Arabic and Persian—and make miraculous claims about attraction, exorcism, wealth, enemy destruction, etc.
In modern times, the situation has worsened. Many individuals market Shabar Mantras as instant remedies for fear, money problems, relationships, or personal enemies. On the other side, desperate people spend money hoping for immediate relief. Exploitation thrives because these texts promise supernatural shortcuts instead of genuine spiritual discipline. Even in areas like Nabadwip (West Bengal), where Vaishnava traditions should emphasize devotion, some people privately attempt to use Shabar formulas for attraction or manipulation—practices entirely contrary to their own theology.
Some people practice the Aghori Shavar Mantra in Varanashi –
The truth is simple: Shabar Mantras do not belong to the philosophy, discipline, ethics, or scriptural authority of Sanātana Dharma. They are products of folk magic, not revelations of sages; commercial tools, not spiritual paths; manipulative shortcuts, not dharmic practice. Their use often encourages superstition, fear, dependency, and exploitation rather than clarity, devotion, or liberation. Understanding their history and nature is important precisely so they can be recognized—and rejected—without confusion or misplaced reverence.

It is said in such practices that a doll made using clothing belonging to the person one wishes to influence is to be ritually empowered with a mantra. The practitioner is then supposed to take three needles, also empowered with the mantra, meditate on the person, and symbolically direct these energies toward the doll — the head, the heart, and the navel — while reciting the mantra. After this symbolic act, the doll is quietly placed into a container and buried in a cremation ground.

Some cadres of the Ramakrishna Mission (Belur) claim that certain members practise the traditions of Muhammadi Pir, Jalaluddin Pir, and Kalua Pir, and they allege that their guru Ramakrishna, after supposedly converting to Islam, consumed beef and practised Islamic Shabar mantras. They also assert that his wife, Sarada Devi, sought help from a Muslim pir of Tarakeswar to cure her husband’s persistent stomach illness; when this reportedly did not work, she then prayed to an Aghori in Tarakeswar, but with no result. According to these narratives, Gadadhar Chatterjee—later known as Ramakrishna—eventually developed an incurable throat cancer and died prematurely.
