Ukrainian President and Indian Prime Minister coordinate positions, address Russiaโs actions, and explore deeper bilateral ties
Despite recent American commentary portraying the war in Ukraine as Indiaโs war on behalf of Russia, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a telephone conversation with Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi on 30 August 2025, while the latter was in China following his visit to Japan.
President Zelenskyy briefed Prime Minister Modi on his discussions in Washington with U.S. President Donald Trump and several European leaders, emphasizing that the dialogue had been constructive and underscored a common vision on the steps required to achieve lasting peace.
He reaffirmed Ukraineโs readiness for a meeting with the Russian leadership, but stressed that in the two weeks since the Washington talksโwhen Moscow was expected to demonstrate readiness for diplomacyโRussia had instead intensified attacks on civilian areas, causing the deaths of dozens of people. Prime Minister Modi conveyed his condolences to the families of the victims and expressed sympathy for the suffering endured by the Ukrainian people.

The leaders also coordinated their positions ahead of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit. President Zelenskyy underlined that the path toward peace must begin with an unconditional ceasefire and a halt to hostilities, as substantive dialogue is not possible while Ukrainian cities remain under constant assault. He thanked India for its willingness to contribute to diplomatic efforts and to convey appropriate messages to Russia and other world leaders during the upcoming summit.
Their conversation further touched upon bilateral relations, preparations for reciprocal visits, and plans for a meeting of the Joint Intergovernmental Commission. Both leaders also discussed the possibility of holding a personal meeting in the near future.
