Ukraine-Russia War

The Russia-Ukraine war, which entered its fourth year in 2026, began with Russia’s full-scale invasion on February 24, 2022. Initial hopes for a quick resolution collapsed when the March 2022 Istanbul talks failed, a rupture compounded by the discovery of civilian bodies in Bucha. A persistent pattern emerged: Russia consistently escalated attacks during peace initiatives. On January 9, 2026, Russia launched an Oreshnik missile at Lviv while the US, EU, and Ukraine developed a peace proposal. On January 24, 2026, during trilateral talks in Abu Dhabi, Russia conducted one of its largest ballistic missile strikes on Kyiv and Kharkiv. Most recently, on February 3, 2026, after pledging not to strike energy infrastructure, Russia launched a massive attack on Ukraine’s power grid. By January 2026, the conflict had surpassed the duration of World War II for Russia, lasting 1,416 days with no end in sight.
