Polish President Andrzej Duda Advocates for Ukraine’s NATO Membership as Key to Security
15 January 2025
In a critical display of support for Ukraine amid ongoing Russian aggression, Polish President Andrzej Duda has emphasized that the strongest guarantee of Ukraineโs security lies in its membership in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
Speaking at a joint press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Duda addressed pivotal discussions on Ukraineโs aspirations to join the European Union and NATO. He lauded Ukraine’s progress, highlighting the granting of EU candidate status at the onset of the Russian invasion in 2022.

โI hope that today, as soon as possible, all remaining steps toward Ukraineโs full accession to the EU can be achieved,โ Duda remarked.
However, he stressed that Ukraineโs security needs outweigh all else. โThe strongest guarantee of security for Ukraine would be NATO membership, tied to Article 5. I believe NATO will fulfill this role in the near future,โ he stated.
Duda acknowledged that full NATO membership might only be feasible after the conclusion of the war but urged NATO member states to take proactive measures. โIssuing a formal invitation to Ukraine would serve as the first formal step toward future membership and the provision of real security guarantees,โ he explained.
Poland, a steadfast ally of Ukraine since the onset of Russia’s invasion, has been a vocal advocate for NATOโs increased involvement in supporting Ukraine. โAs a president of the Republic of Poland, Ukraineโs neighbor, and someone deeply invested in helping Ukraine, I am explicitly in favor of NATO extending an invitation to Ukraine,โ Duda affirmed.

He expressed optimism, noting a growing number of NATO members backing this initiative.
The two leaders will reconvene next week at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, where they will participate in the opening of Ukraine House. The event will feature panels focused on Ukraineโs resilience and path forward amid the ongoing conflict.
Context and Implications
Dudaโs call for NATO membership highlights Polandโs leadership in rallying support for Ukraine within the international community. It reflects a broader recognition that Ukraineโs integration into NATO is crucial for long-term peace and stability in the region.
