NATIONAL HEADLINES

PTB: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the state-of-the-art Passenger Terminal Building at Dera Baba Nanak in Punjab on November 9, formally opening the Kartarpur Corridor which will connect two historical gurdwaras on either side of the India-Pakistan border for pilgrims.

IIT Roorkee:  IIT Roorkee, together with the Indian Space Research Organisation and the Defence Research and Development Organisation, will design and develop cutting edge technology for space and defence projects. Researchers are working on “thin membrane-based technology to develop parachutes for fighter aircraft and could be crucial in boosting indigenous production in the country, the officials said.

Ayodhya Case: Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi will meet Uttar Pradesh chief secretary and director general of police today to assess the law and order arrangement in the state ahead of the verdict on the Ayodhya land dispute case which will be pronounced next week, sources said.

NAFRS: The NAFRS is proposed national-level platforms of digital facial images that will help police identify persons by automatically matching facial features from digital images, sketches and videos with an already existing database of images. The National Crime Record Bureau, under the home ministry, issued a tender in July this year to procure software and services for developing NAFRS from private firms. On November 7, it extended the deadline for submission of bids for the third time to make it January 3, 2020. Once rolled out nationally, NAFRS will potentially be the world’s biggest facial recognition system with a capacity of processing one crore facial images and upgradable to up to five crore images.

TRIUMP: India and US will jointly conduct Tiger TRIUMP, the first-ever tri-services amphibious exercise. It is to be conducted in Visakhapatnam and Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh. It includes field training and events that simulate humanitarian assistance in disaster times. The event will also hold simulations in moving disaster relief forces from ship to shore.

LPAI: A 1989 batch IPS officer of Uttar Pradesh cadre, Aditya Mishra has become the chairman of the Land Ports Authority of India (LPAI). The Appointments Committee of Cabinet (ACC) chaired by PM Narendra Modi has approved this appointment. He was appointed on the recommendations of a search-cum-selection panel. LPAI is a statutory body set up by Land Ports Authority of India Act, 2010 on 1 March 2012. It works under the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).

INTERNATIONAL HEADLINES

US: The United States has announced the increase of H-1B work visa application fee by $10 as part of its revised selection process. This non-refundable fee will support the new electronic registration system to make the H-1B cap selection process more efficient for both petitioners and the federal agency said the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) on November 7.

Green Card :The Foundation for India and Indian Diaspora Studies (FIIDS), has urged the United States Senate to pass a pending bill that removes country cap on issuing of Green Cards or legal permanent residency, the absence of which, it said, has resulted in talent drain from the US and is negatively impacting American universities. It also added that the excessive delays in the processing of permanent residency applications due to country-wise quota contributed to America’s loss of revenue, market leadership and competitive edge.

US: New York state Judge Saliann Scarpulla on November7, ordered President Donald Trump to pay $2 million to an array of charities as a fine for misusing his own charitable foundation to further his political and business interests. He imposed the penalty in connection with a lawsuit brought against Trump by the New York attorney general’s office over the handling of the Trump Foundation’s assets.


ECONOMY HEADLINES

Moody’s: The Indian rupee opened on a cautious note and fell 30 paise to 71.27 against the US dollar in early trade today after Moody’s changed its India rating outlook to negative citing lower economic growth. Moody’s has changed the outlook on India’s ratings to ‘negative’ from ‘stable’, saying there was increasing risks that economic growth will remain materially lower than the past.

Optical fibre: The government may impose a provisional safeguard duty of 25 per cent on imports of single-mode optical fibre, used for signal transmission, based on a Commerce Ministry investigation that found a sudden and significant surge in the imports of the fibre.
