Lesson 5 of 20: Going places, the future, and “I want to …”

After today you will be able to:

• say where you’re going and how you get there
• talk about tomorrow / next week / this summer
• say “I want to eat / drink / see / learn …”
• ask and give simple directions

1. The verb “to go” – πάω (irregular but super common)

Useful right now:

• Πάω στο σπίτι. → I’m going home.
• Πάμε; → Shall we go? / Let’s go!
• Πού πας; → Where are you going?

2. Near future = “θα” + verb (it’s that easy!)

θα + the same form you already know:

Examples:

• Αύριο θα πάω στη θάλασσα. → Tomorrow I’m going to the beach.
• Το καλοκαίρι θα έρθω Ελλάδα! → This summer I’ll come to Greece!

3. “I want to … / I have to … / I can …” → να + verb

Real examples:

• Θέλω να πιω μια κρύα μπύρα.
• Πρέπει να δουλέψω αύριο.
• Μπορείς να μιλήσεις πιο αργά; → Can you speak more slowly?

4. Basic directions & transport (you’ll survive any city)

5. Mini real-life dialogues

Dialogue 1 – Asking directions You: Συγγνώμη, πού είναι ο σταθμός του μετρό; Person: Ευθεία και μετά δεξιά. Είναι πέντε λεπτά με τα πόδια. You: Ευχαριστώ πολύ!

Dialogue 2 – Making weekend plans A: Τι κάνεις το Σάββατο; B: Θα πάω στην παραλία με φίλους. Θέλεις να έρθεις; A: Ναι! Θέλω να κολυμπήσω. Τι ώρα θα φύγουμε; B: Θα περάσω να σε πάρω στις δέκα το πρωί. A: Τέλεια! Τα λέμε!

7. Homework (10–12 minutes)

1. Write or say 8 sentences about your plans for the next 7 days using θα + verb. Example: Την Δευτέρα θα δουλέψω. Την Τρίτη θα πάω γυμναστήριο.
2. Practice asking for and giving directions to 3 imaginary places (bank, beach, pharmacy).
3. Record yourself saying: «Αύριο θα ξυπνήσω νωρίς, θα πιω καφέ και μετά θα πάω στη δουλειά. Το βράδυ θέλω να φάω σουβλάκι και να πιω μπύρα με φίλους.»

When you’re ready, just say “Lesson 6” and we’ll learn:

• Family members & describing people
• Adjectives (beautiful, big, expensive…)
• The accusative case (so you can finally say “I see the cat” correctly)
