Modern Greek for Indian Students (Fourth Lesson) Telling Time

Lesson 4 of 20: Telling Time, Days & Months, and Regular Verbs (-ω).

After today, you’ll be able to:

• Say what time it is
• Say what day it is and make plans
• Talk about things you do every day (I eat, I work, I speak, I live…)

1. Telling the time (the way Greeks actually say it)

Useful extras:

• και μισή = half past
• και τέταρτο = quarter past
• παρά τέταρτο = quarter to
• παρά δέκα / πέντε = ten / five minutes to
• ακριβώς = exactly
• περίπου = about / around

Real-life examples you’ll hear:

• «Το μαγαζί ανοίγει στις εννιά παρά τέταρτο.»
• «Η πτήση είναι στις έντεκα το πρωί.»

2. Days of the week + today/tomorrow/yesterday

• Σήμερα see-MEH-ra today
• Αύριο AV-ree-o tomorrow
• Χθες khthes yesterday
• Μεθαύριο meh-THAV-ree-o the day after tomorrow

3. Months (quick version – just recognize them)

Ιανουάριος, Φεβρουάριος, Μάρτιος, Απρίλιος, Μάιος, Ιούνιος, Ιούλιος, Αύγουστος, Σεπτέμβριος, Οκτώβριος, Νοέμβριος, Δεκέμβριος

4. Regular verbs – Group A (-ω verbs)

99% of everyday verbs follow this pattern.

Example verb: μιλάω (mee-LAH-oh) = I speak

Just change the ending! Here are the 8 most useful ones right now:

Examples you can say today:

• Μένω στην Αθήνα. → I live in Athens.
• Δουλεύω κάθε μέρα. → I work every day.
• Μαθαίνω ελληνικά! → I’m learning Greek!

5. Mini dialogue – making plans

A: Τι ώρα είναι; B: Είναι έξι και μισή το απόγευμα. A: Θέλεις να πάμε για καφέ αύριο; B: Ναι! Σάββατο στις δέκα το πρωί σου κάνει; A: Τέλεια! Μένω κοντά στο μετρό. Εσύ πού μένεις; B: Μένω στο Κολωνάκι. Ερχόμαστε εμείς με τα πόδια. A: Ωραία! Τα λέμε αύριο λοιπόν.

6. Vocabulary (15 words – 3 minutes)

7. Homework (10 minutes)

1. Tell the time out loud for: 7:15, 9:30, 11:45, 18:05, 00:20
2. Make 10 true sentences about yourself using the new verbs: Example: Μένω στη Νέα Υόρκη. Δουλεύω από το σπίτι. Πίνω πολύ καφέ.
3. Write or say a tiny plan for tomorrow in Greek (3–4 sentences).
