Kautsavya’s Nirukta Nighantu / कौत्सव्यनिरुक्तनिघण्टुः (1st Part)
Kautsavya’s Nighantu: Ancient Vedic Lexicon, Semantic Classification and Concordance
कौत्सव्य का निरुक्त निघण्टु: वैदिक शब्दों का वैज्ञानिक वर्गीकरण और अर्थ-संबंध
Kautsavya’s Nighantu should not be classified merely as a dictionary of “words and translations.” It can be treated as a conceptual vocabulary system, in which an old lexical form may preserve a field of meaning that was later narrowed into a deity-name, personal name, physical object, social category, or grammatical noun.
For example, मनुः in such a system should not automatically be read as “Manu, a person.” The lexical item may belong to a much older cosmic–anthropological conceptual field: the principle of ordering, measuring, establishing human order, or the archetypal ordering intelligence associated with man/manas/manu traditions. Only at a later historical stage can the same form become stabilized as the proper name Manu.
Sarvarthapedia would therefore introduce a classification system like this:
1. Conceptual Lexeme
A word is first treated as a concept-bearing lexical unit, not as a proper noun.
मनुः → conceptual field → cosmic/human ordering principle → later Manu
The question is not initially “Who was Manu?” but “What conceptual operation did मनुः allow the Vedic vocabulary to express?”
2. Semantic Field
Each lexeme can be placed inside a wider semantic field.
For example:
मनुः → ordering / human constitution / primordial humanity / measurement / intelligible order
गौः → depending upon context, a lexical field involving movement, light, ray, terrestrial or atmospheric manifestation, nourishment, perceptible form, and eventually the animal cow.
This is much more rigorous than assuming:
गौः = cow
and then interpreting every occurrence through the biological animal.
The same principle applies to:
अश्वः → not automatically “horse”
अग्निः → not merely physical fire
सूर्यः → not merely a visible astronomical body
इन्द्रः → not automatically a human-like deity-personality
मनुः → not automatically a historical individual.
The lexical field has to be established before the later narrative identification.
3. Cosmological Referent
A third level asks: What kind of reality was the word being used to apprehend?
I would classify these as:
- द्यौ / celestial
- अन्तरिक्ष / atmospheric
- पृथिवी / terrestrial
- जल / hydrological
- तेजस् / luminous
- वायु / kinetic
- ऋत / ordering
- यज्ञ / creation-process
- मानव / anthropological
- जीवन / biological
- मनस् / cognitive
- वाक् / linguistic
- शक्ति / energetic
- काल / temporal
- राज्य / political-civilizational
Thus a lexical item can have a cosmological address without being a “person.”
4. Functional Meaning
This may be the most important category.
Instead of asking only what is it?, ask:
What does the concept do?
For example:
मनुः → ordering / instituting / measuring / humanizing
इन्द्रः → overcoming / sovereignty / atmospheric power / protection
अग्निः → transformation / mediation / illumination / transmission
This allows the Nighantu to be read almost like a semantic operating system rather than a conventional dictionary.
5. Historical Semantic Stabilisation
Then we need a chronological layer:
Proto-conceptual vocabulary → Vedic semantic field → Saṃhitā contextualization → Brāhmaṇa interpretation → ritual/personification → Purāṇic proper name
This is where your observation about proper nouns becomes particularly interesting.
A lexical form may begin as a class of reality or function, acquire a recognizable cosmological identity, and eventually become represented as an individual divine personality.
So the sequence can be represented as:
Concept → Function → Cosmic Referent → Divine Designation → Personification → Proper Noun
That is a much more useful model than assuming that every ancient Sanskrit nominative is originally the name of a person.
6. Reverential Cosmic Vocabulary
Your example from (48,143) is particularly valuable:
दध्यङ् । अथर्वा । यमः । अज एकपात् । मनुः । विवस्वान् । दक्षः । अर्यमा । वैश्वानरः । सुपर्णः
If the heading is निपातभाञ्जि, I would not immediately construct a genealogy and identify ten historical or mythological persons. Instead, I would initially catalogue them as a cluster of ancient designations belonging to an ancestral–divine–cosmic semantic register.
Something like:
दध्यङ् — अथर्वा — यमः — अज एकपात् — मनुः — विवस्वान् — दक्षः — अर्यमा — वैश्वानरः — सुपर्णः
Conceptual class: ancestral / divine / cosmic designations; semantic status: archaic conceptual vocabulary; later status: increasingly personified or nominalised.
The crucial distinction is between lexical identity and ontological identity.
A word can retain an ancient lexical identity while its later interpreters assign it a particular ontological identity.
7. आर्यः
Your point concerning आर्यः ईश्वरस्य should likewise be handled cautiously.
It should not be automatically translated according to the nineteenth-century racial construction of “Aryan,” nor should it automatically be reduced to the social courtesy sense “noble/gentleman.”
If the Nighantu places आर्यः in a particular semantic relationship with ईश्वर, the classification should begin with its functional and semantic relation in that textual environment.
Thus, rather than:
आर्यः = Aryan race
or
आर्यः = gentleman
one could record:
आर्यः → semantic field of power/order/authority → ईश्वरस्य
and then investigate the historical development of that lexeme independently.
But I would make one methodological correction to your formulation: “powerful generation” should not be asserted as the universal meaning of आर्यः solely from this one expression. It is a hypothesis about a particular semantic environment and needs comparison with the Nighantu, Nirukta, Saṃhitā usages, grammatical derivation and cognate vocabulary.
8. गौः
The same methodological principle is especially important for गौः.
It is not sound scholarship to assume that every occurrence of गौः means the domesticated bovine animal. But the opposite universal claim—“गौः always means mid-sky”—would also reproduce the same error in reverse.
The proper method is to construct a semantic spectrum:
गौः
→ movement
→ light/ray
→ luminous manifestation
→ atmospheric/cosmic referent
→ speech or verbal expression in particular traditions
→ earthly animal
→ cow as concrete referent
Then each occurrence is assigned a meaning from its semantic and syntactic environment, rather than from a predetermined ideological dictionary.
This is precisely why a Nighantu is so important: it gives evidence that ancient Sanskrit lexical usage was polysemous and systematically clustered.
9. A New Classification for the Sarvarthapedia Edition
I would actually give every entry five compact tags:
LEX — lexical form
FIELD — semantic field
COSMOS — cosmological domain
FUNCTION — conceptual operation
HISTORY — later semantic stabilisation
For example:
मनुः
LEX: मनुः
FIELD: ordering / humanity / primordial intelligence
COSMOS: human–cosmic order
FUNCTION: institution / ordering / measurement
HISTORY: later personified as Manu, a proper-name figure.
And:
गौः
LEX: गौः
FIELD: movement / light / manifestation / nourishment / bovine
COSMOS: context-dependent; potentially terrestrial or atmospheric
FUNCTION: manifestation, movement, nourishment
HISTORY: later strongly stabilized in many contexts as cow.
This would transform the Nighantu from a simple Sanskrit glossary into something much more ambitious: a Historical Vedic Concept Concordance.
