A Monthly Exploration of Bengali Language, Literature, Culture, and History
Sahitya Samrat is an online Bengali journal and an encyclopedia of language and literature, published monthly. It features a wide range of sections, including মূল প্রবন্ধ (main articles), সম্পাদকীয় (editorials), বিশেষ নিবন্ধ (special essays), ছোট গল্প (short stories), সাহিত্য বিজ্ঞান (literary studies), আবহমান সভ্যতা (heritage and civilization), দেশের কথা (essays on the nation), অনূদিত সাহিত্য (translated works), বঙ্গ রসনা (Bengali cuisine and culture), and ধারাবাহিক (serial publications), among others.
The journal is edited by a group of scholars and reviewed by university professors to maintain academic rigor, literary value, and stylistic refinement. “Sahitya Samrat” is the popular name of the Sahitya Samrat Bengali Journal, which is published through a uniquely designed website dedicated to supporting the vast landscape of Bengali literature. It reflects both the linguistic richness and the historical development of Bengali literature, covering not only West Bengal but also the Bengali-speaking regions of Tripura and Bangladesh.
Alongside its journal content, the website also serves as a comprehensive encyclopedia of Bengali language and literature. It has further developed a unique grammar of Bengali, known as গৌড়-বঙ্গীয় ব্যাকরণ (Gour-Bangiya Grammar). The name recalls the historical region of Gouda, associated with King Sasanka, often regarded as the first independent Bengali ruler. From his time, Bengal began to take shape as Gouda-Banga. The Bengali language, which evolved from Prakrit and Goudiya, reached a stable and modern form during the era of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu in the 16th century.
The website is thus a vast repository of research materials on Bengali language, culture, and literature, offering both scholarly depth and cultural continuity.
