Nurlan Yermekbayev and António Guterres discuss peace, security, and sustainable development on SCO sidelines
On August 31, 2025, in Tianjin, People’s Republic of China, on the margins of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit, SCO Secretary-General Nurlan Yermekbayev met with the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, who had arrived in China to take part in the “SCO Plus” meeting.
During the conversation, the SCO Secretary-General reaffirmed that the member states of the Organization view the United Nations as the central universal multilateral institution and an indispensable partner in maintaining international peace and security, advancing sustainable global development, and addressing emerging challenges and threats. He underscored the SCO Secretariat’s readiness to expand cooperation with UN agencies, including through the implementation of mutually beneficial initiatives and the convening of joint events.
The UN Secretary-General, for his part, congratulated Nurlan Yermekbayev on assuming his new responsibilities, extended his best wishes for success, and noted the constructive momentum in the cooperation between the two organizations, offering a positive outlook on the prospects for its further strengthening.
Nurlan Yermekbayev also shared his plans to participate in the forthcoming UN General Assembly and related events in New York, to support the promotion of the UNGA Resolution on cooperation between the UN and the SCO, and to prepare for the upcoming meeting of the SCO Heads of State Council.
Both sides expressed their shared interest in continuing dialogue on pressing regional and global matters. The meeting took place in a cordial and constructive atmosphere.
It may be recalled that on December 2, 2004, the UN General Assembly adopted Resolution No. 59/48 granting the SCO observer status at the UN, and on April 5, 2010, a Joint Declaration on Cooperation between the SCO and UN Secretariats was signed.
