From Bengal to Bangladesh: A Century of Struggle, Statehood, and Democratic Aspiration
Bangladesh did not emerge suddenly in 1971. It was the culmination of a century-long political evolution in Bengal, during which competing visions of community, nationhood, religion, language, citizenship, and statehood interacted to produce one of the most dynamic political histories in South Asia.
The Sarvarthapedia argues that modern Bangladesh was shaped by six interconnected historical forces:
1. Identity Formation
From the Partition of Bengal in 1905 to the Language Movement of 1952 and beyond, politics in Bengal was fundamentally influenced by debates over:
- Bengali identity
- Muslim identity
- Religious community
- Regional consciousness
- National belonging
The history of Bangladesh is therefore also a history of identity formation.
2. Popular Mobilization as the Engine of Change
Virtually every major political transformation in Bangladesh was preceded by mass mobilization.
Examples include:
- Swadeshi Movement
- Language Movement
- Mass Uprising of 1969
- Liberation War
- Anti-Ershad Movement
- Shahbag Movement
- Quota Reform Movements
- July Uprising of 2024
A recurring pattern emerges:
Political legitimacy in Bangladesh has repeatedly been tested and redefined through popular movements.
3. Tension Between Democracy and State Power
A recurring theme throughout the twentieth and twenty-first centuries is the struggle between:
- Electoral legitimacy
- Administrative authority
- Military influence
- Executive concentration of power
- Democratic accountability
This tension appears in:
- Pakistan period
- BAKSAL era
- Military governments
- Caretaker regimes
- Contemporary governance debates
4. Inclusion and Exclusion
The political history of Bangladesh cannot be understood without examining:
- Religious minorities
- Ethnic communities
- Refugees
- Migration
- Gender
- Citizenship
This encyclopedia therefore treats minority experiences not as peripheral subjects but as integral components of national history.
5. The Search for a Stable Political Order
From 1900 onward, Bengal and Bangladesh experienced multiple constitutional and political experiments:
- Colonial rule
- Provincial autonomy
- Pakistan federation
- Parliamentary democracy
- Presidential systems
- One-party rule
- Military governments
- Caretaker administrations
- Interim governments
- Democratic transitions
The overarching historical question becomes:
How can political authority be made both effective and legitimate in Bangladesh?
The Central Thesis: The history of Bangladesh is the history of a peopleโs persistent effort to achieve political self-determination, democratic representation, social justice, and national dignity amid recurring conflicts over identity, power, and state legitimacy.
