10 Upanishads: Aitareya, Brihadaranyaka, Chandogya, Isha, Katha, Kena, Mandukya, Mundaka, Prashna and Taittiriya.
Sankaracharya composed his profound commentaries only on a select group of Apouruแนฃeya Upanishads (Shastra)โtexts regarded as eternal and authorless, forming the philosophical heart of Hindu wisdom. Tradition preserved through parampara reveals that even in his era, teachers imparted knowledge of merely ten sacred Upanishads, which became the essence of spiritual instruction.
Hence, Sankara dedicated his luminous intellect solely to these eleven, discerning in them the deepest revelations about consciousness and ultimate reality. Though he occasionally mentioned other Upanishads to strengthen his exposition, those ancillary texts have vanished with time, leaving an unfilled space in our grasp of his full philosophical vision.
Centuries later, Acharya Dayananda Saraswati, the great Vedic reformer, upheld Sankaraโs discernment, reaffirming the centrality of these eleven in the unbroken spiritual lineage. Long before Dayananda, Acharya Ramanuja, and Sayanacharya, too, acknowledged only ten of these Upanishads as authoritative, demonstrating the enduring influence of these scriptures on diverse schools of Indian thought.
These ten timeless works โ Isha, Kena, Katha, Prashna, Mundaka, Mandukya, Aitareya, Taittiriya, Chandogya, and Brihadaranyaka โ continue to illuminate the seekersโ path toward self-realization and the ultimate truth.
