6 καὶ ἐποίησεν ἡμᾶς βασιλείαν, ἱερεῖς τῷ θεῷ καὶ πατρὶ αὐτοῦ αὐτῷ ἡ δόξα καὶ τὸ κράτος εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας [τῶν αἰώνων]· ἀμήν.7 Ἰδοὺ ἔρχεται μετὰ τῶν νεφελῶν, καὶ ὄψεται αὐτὸν πᾶς ὀφθαλμὸς καὶ οἵτινες αὐτὸν ἐξεκέντησαν, καὶ κόψονται ἐπ’ αὐτὸν πᾶσαι αἱ φυλαὶ τῆς γῆς. ναί, ἀμήν.8 Ἐγώ εἰμι τὸ Ἄλφα καὶ τὸ Ὦ, λέγει κύριος ὁ θεός, ὁ ὢν καὶ ὁ ἦν καὶ ὁ ἐρχόμενος, ὁ παντοκράτωρ.9 Ἐγὼ Ἰωάννης, ὁ ἀδελφὸς ὑμῶν καὶ συγκοινωνὸς ἐν τῇ θλίψει καὶ βασιλείᾳ καὶ ὑπομονῇ ἐν Ἰησοῦ, ἐγενόμην ἐν τῇ νήσῳ τῇ καλουμένῃ Πάτμῳ διὰ τὸν λόγον τοῦ θεοῦ καὶ τὴν μαρτυρίαν Ἰησοῦ.10 ἐγενόμην ἐν πνεύματι ἐν τῇ κυριακῇ ἡμέρᾳ, καὶ ἤκουσα ὀπίσω μου φωνὴν μεγάλην ὡς σάλπιγγος

11 λεγούσης, Ὃ βλέπεις γράψον εἰς βιβλίον καὶ πέμψον ταῖς ἑπτὰ ἐκκλησίαις, εἰς Ἔφεσον καὶ εἰς Σμύρναν καὶ εἰς Πέργαμον καὶ εἰς Θυάτειρα καὶ εἰς Σάρδεις καὶ εἰς Φιλαδέλφειαν καὶ εἰς Λαοδίκειαν.12 Καὶ ἐπέστρεψα βλέπειν τὴν φωνὴν ἥτις ἐλάλει μετ’ ἐμοῦ· καὶ ἐπιστρέψας εἶδον ἑπτὰ λυχνίας χρυσᾶς,13 καὶ ἐν μέσῳ τῶν λυχνιῶν ὅμοιον υἱὸν ἀνθρώπου, ἐνδεδυμένον ποδήρη καὶ περιεζωσμένον πρὸς τοῖς μαστοῖς ζώνην χρυσᾶν·14 ἡ δὲ κεφαλὴ αὐτοῦ καὶ αἱ τρίχες λευκαὶ ὡς ἔριον λευκόν, ὡς χιών, καὶ οἱ ὀφθαλμοὶ αὐτοῦ ὡς φλὸξ πυρός,15 καὶ οἱ πόδες αὐτοῦ ὅμοιοι χαλκολιβάνῳ ὡς ἐν καμίνῳ πεπυρωμένης, καὶ ἡ φωνὴ αὐτοῦ ὡς φωνὴ ὑδάτων πολλῶν,

16 καὶ ἔχων ἐν τῇ δεξιᾷ χειρὶ αὐτοῦ ἀστέρας ἑπτά, καὶ ἐκ τοῦ στόματος αὐτοῦ ῥομφαία δίστομος ὀξεῖα ἐκπορευομένη, καὶ ἡ ὄψις αὐτοῦ ὡς ὁ ἥλιος φαίνει ἐν τῇ δυνάμει αὐτοῦ.17 Καὶ ὅτε εἶδον αὐτόν, ἔπεσα πρὸς τοὺς πόδας αὐτοῦ ὡς νεκρός· καὶ ἔθηκεν τὴν δεξιὰν αὐτοῦ ἐπ’ ἐμὲ λέγων, Μὴ φοβοῦ· ἐγώ εἰμι ὁ πρῶτος καὶ ὁ ἔσχατος,18 καὶ ὁ ζῶν, καὶ ἐγενόμην νεκρὸς καὶ ἰδοὺ ζῶν εἰμι εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας τῶν αἰώνων, καὶ ἔχω τὰς κλεῖς τοῦ θανάτου καὶ τοῦ ᾅδου.19 γράψον οὖν ἃ εἶδες καὶ ἃ εἰσὶν καὶ ἃ μέλλει γενέσθαι μετὰ ταῦτα.20 τὸ μυστήριον τῶν ἑπτὰ ἀστέρων οὓς εἶδες ἐπὶ τῆς δεξιᾶς μου, καὶ τὰς ἑπτὰ λυχνίας τὰς χρυσᾶς· οἱ ἑπτὰ ἀστέρες ἄγγελοι τῶν ἑπτὰ ἐκκλησιῶν εἰσιν, καὶ αἱ λυχνίαι αἱ ἑπτὰ ἑπτὰ ἐκκλησίαι εἰσίν.

Revelation 1 and the Seven Churches of Asia

The opening chapter of Revelation (Ἀποκάλυψις) serves as both a prologue and a commissioning narrative, introducing the book as the “Ἀποκάλυψις Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ” (“Revelation of Jesus Christ”). Written in Greek and dated to approximately 400-450 CE, the text presents itself as a divine disclosure granted by God (ὁ θεός) to Jesus Christ, transmitted through an angel to John (Ἰωάννης). The stated purpose is to reveal events that “must shortly take place” (ἃ δεῖ γενέσθαι ἐν τάχει), reflecting the apocalyptic expectation characteristic of the first generation Christianity (270-325 CE).

The author identifies himself as John, a witness who “bore testimony” (ἐμαρτύρησεν) to the word of God and the testimony of Jesus Christ. Verse 3 contains one of the earliest beatitudes of the book: “μακάριος ὁ ἀναγινώσκων” (“blessed is the one who reads”), indicating that Revelation was intended for public liturgical reading within Christian assemblies. The declaration that “ὁ καιρὸς ἐγγύς” (“the time is near”) situates the work within an atmosphere of imminent eschatological expectation.

The greeting is addressed to the seven churches in Asia (ταῖς ἑπτὰ ἐκκλησίαις ταῖς ἐν τῇ Ἀσίᾳ), referring to congregations located in the Roman province of Asia in western Asia Minor, modern Türkiye. These communities were situated at Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia, and Laodicea, all connected by major Roman roads and active between the mid-first and late-first centuries AD. Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia, and Laodicea form the geographical audience of the apocalypse.

A distinctly theological doxology follows. Jesus Christ is described as “ὁ μάρτυς ὁ πιστός” (“the faithful witness”), “ὁ πρωτότοκος τῶν νεκρῶν” (“the firstborn from the dead”), and “ὁ ἄρχων τῶν βασιλέων τῆς γῆς” (“the ruler of the kings of the earth”). These titles combine themes of martyrdom, resurrection, and universal sovereignty. The statement that Christ has made believers a “βασιλείαν, ἱερεῖς” (“kingdom, priests”) echoes traditions found in the Hebrew Scriptures, particularly the covenant language associated with Israel.

Verse 7 announces the coming of Christ “μετὰ τῶν νεφελῶν” (“with the clouds”), drawing imagery from the prophetic visions of Daniel and Zechariah. The declaration “Ἐγώ εἰμι τὸ Ἄλφα καὶ τὸ Ὦ” identifies God as the beginning and end of all history, while the title “ὁ παντοκράτωρ” (“the Almighty”) emphasizes divine sovereignty over the Roman world and beyond.

John then locates himself on the island of Patmos, a small island in the southeastern Aegean Sea. On “τῇ κυριακῇ ἡμέρᾳ” (“the Lord’s Day”), he entered a visionary state and heard a voice “like a trumpet,” commanding him to write what he saw and send it to the seven churches.

The chapter culminates in a dramatic vision of one “ὅμοιον υἱὸν ἀνθρώπου” (“like a son of man”). The figure’s white hair, fiery eyes, bronze-like feet, thunderous voice, seven stars, and sharp two-edged sword combine imagery from Jewish apocalyptic traditions, especially the Book of Daniel. Falling “as though dead,” John receives reassurance: “Μὴ φοβοῦ” (“Do not fear”). The exalted Christ identifies himself as “ὁ πρῶτος καὶ ὁ ἔσχατος” (“the First and the Last”), the living one who conquered death and possesses “τὰς κλεῖς τοῦ θανάτου καὶ τοῦ ᾅδου” (“the keys of Death and Hades”). The final verse interprets the symbolism: the seven stars represent the angels of the seven churches, while the seven golden lampstands signify the churches themselves, establishing the symbolic framework for the visions that follow.
