Soldier Died: Two soldiers were killed after an avalanche hit their patrol in the southern Siachen glacier in Ladakh on Saturday morning. Army spokesman Col Rajesh Kalia said that an army patrol operating at an altitude of approximately 18,000 feet in southern Siachen glacier was hit by an avalanche. “An Avalanche Rescue Team (ART) following the patrol immediately rushed and managed to locate and pull out all members of the patrol. Simultaneously, army helicopters were pressed into service to evacuate the avalanche victims,” Kalia said.
Jharkhand Poll: The first of the five-phase elections in Jharkhand on Saturday recorded an estimate of 62.87 voter turnout, amid stray incidents of violence in parts of the state. Polling, which ended at 3 pm across the 13 constituencies, saw a total of 7,83,055 electorate, including 18,01,356 women and five third-gender voters.
Hafiz Saeed: Chief of the banned terror outfit Jamat-ud-Dawa (JuD) and mastermind of the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks Hafiz Saeed will be prosecuted under Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA), 1997 on terror financing charges by an anti-terrorism court in Lahore next month, news agency PTI reported on Saturday. An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Lahore held in a hearing against Saeed and his accomplices on terror financing on Saturday. The court fixed December 7 as the date for indictment of the JuD chief and others.
Surinam: A Suriname Criminal court on Friday convicted President Desi Bouterse of murder for execution of 15 opponents in 1982 following a coup to seize power, sentencing the man to 20 years in prison. Opposition parties called for Bouterse, currently in China on an official visit, to step down. The military court that found him guilty has not yet ordered his arrest.
London Terrorism: Usman Khan a Muslim, who stabbed and killed two people in the London Bridge terrorist attack on Friday has been identified as a convicted terrorist who was jailed seven years ago over a plot to bomb the London Stock Exchange and build a terrorist training camp on land owned by his family in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Usman Khan, had also planned a Mumbai-style attack on the UK Parliament and described by the judge who sentenced him for terrorism offences in 2012.
Pakistan CIC: As the retirement of the incumbent chief election commissioner (CEC) around the corner, Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif has sent three recommendations for the post to Prime Minister Imran Khan, on Saturday. Shehbaz, in a letter, suggested former bureaucrat Nasir Mahmood Khosa, former ambassador to the US Jalil Abbas Jilani and retired civil servant Akhlaq Ahmed Tarar as “eminently qualified” for the position. The tenure of incumbent CEC retired Justice Sardar Mohammad Raza ends on December 6.
