Fearing INDI Doomed CPI (M) Never Damned TMC for RG Kar Rape and Murder Case
Date: 09/08/2024
RG Kar Rape Case: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has been facing increasing pressure from the public and media to take a strong stance against the destruction of evidence in the RG Kar Hospital Lady Doctor rape and murder case under the Mamata-led TMC rule in West Bengal. While the official party leadership has not issued a statement, there have been numerous discussions within the party ranks regarding the need for a clear and decisive response. In Kolkata, the local CPI(M) members have been engaged in fervent conversations aimed at addressing the grievous incident, with some members expressing their discontent with the party’s current approach. The planned protests and the youth-led demonstration at the Lal Bazar Kolkata Police headquarters on September 9th signify a growing internal and external demand for the CPI(M) to support the pursuit of justice in this distressing case vocally.
The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has faced criticism for not addressing the RG Kar Hospital Lady Doctor rape and murder case under the Mamata-led TMC rule in West Bengal. Despite the lack of an official statement from the central leadership, it is notable that the local CPI(M) in Kolkata has organized protests related to this case. However, students’ lack of participation in the Nabanna Gherao and the subsequent labeling of the Nabanna March as a BJP initiative has raised concerns. It is believed that the Nabanna March on August 27, 2024, witnessed significant participation, with the protestors demanding Mamata’s resignation. The absence of CPI (M) involvement in this march has been noted, with suggestions that their participation could have significantly impacted the outcome of the protest.

It is important to note the spontaneous and significant nature of the Nabanna March, which was met with a strong response from the Mamata Government. The CPI (M) faces scrutiny for not aligning with this decisive ‘Abhijan’ and its poignant demands.
The Left parties distance themselves from the August 27 Nabanna Abhiyan protest
Ahead of the August 27 Nabanna Abhiyan protest, the Left parties have distanced themselves from the protest march, denouncing it as a “BJP-RSS” ploy to divert “the people’s movement” regarding the rape and murder of a junior doctor. The call for the Nabanna Abhiyan on August 27, aimed at the state secretariat in Howrah, was issued by Paschimbanga Chhatra Samaj. Although the organization maintains it is apolitical, BJP leaders have expressed support for the protest.
The rally scheduled for August 27 faced opposition from student outfits affiliated with the Left parties, citing its clash with the UGC-NET examination. Sources within the CPI(M) revealed that the party explicitly instructed its leaders, members, and affiliated outfits not to participate in the march. Srijan Bhattacharya, a leader of the SFI, emphasized the inappropriateness of organizing a rally on the same day as a significant examination, stating, “We will not be a part of this rally.” Similarly, CPI(M) youth leader Sayan Banerjee voiced concerns about political parties attempting to exploit the people’s movement, asserting, “We can’t allow them to do that.”

The rape and murder of a 31-year-old postgraduate RG Kar trainee doctor in Kolkata on August 9 sparked a movement seeking justice for the victim. Allegations were made against the police, claiming that the crime scene was not protected, the victim’s body was post-mortemed without a formal registration of the First Information Report and subsequently cremated hastily to remove evidence for prosecution. The incident was a clear case of gang rape, and Kolkata police arrested only one accused. Later, the Calcutta High Court transferred the case to the CBI, and the Supreme Court of India took suo motu cognisance of the case.
Regarding the response from the Communist Party of India, it is noticeable that the central leadership of the CPI(M) failed to address the matter or make any official statements. This has led to speculation that the party intentionally distanced itself from the issue, potentially to avoid disrupting the INDI alliance against BJP. This lack of involvement has raised concerns about the party’s stance on this significant issue. Some members of the public have expressed disappointment with the party’s perceived indifference, pointing out that it is important for political parties to address pressing matters and provide clear stances to their constituents. Additionally, the CPI(M)’s silence has prompted further discussions about the internal dynamics and decision-making processes within the party, with some questioning the level of transparency and accountability in its leadership. As the issue continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how the CPI(M) will navigate its stance and communication regarding this issue, and how it will address the concerns raised by its constituents and the general public.

It is quite noticeable that the recent statements from the Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) do not address the RG Kar Hospital Lady Doctor rape and murder case under the Mamata-led TMC rule in West Bengal. This case has sparked widespread outrage and demands for justice from various quarters of society. While there has been significant activity and statements on various other issues, the absence of any mention of this important case in the recent Polit Bureau releases has raised concerns and led to speculation that possibly the party may be tacitly supporting the TMC government in this matter. The silence on such a grave issue has not gone unnoticed by the public, and there is growing pressure on the party to address the concerns and take a clear stance on the matter. The lack of explicit acknowledgment or action on this case has also prompted discussions about the party’s priorities and its approach to addressing critical issues facing the state. The people are looking to the Communist Party of India (Marxist) for a response that demonstrates a commitment to upholding justice and the rights of the citizens, particularly in cases as severe as the RG Kar Hospital Lady Doctor rape and murder.
