RAVIDAS TEMPLE: The Supreme Court on Monday agreed to allow construction of a shrine to Guru Ravidas, revered by the Dalits, in south Delhi, on a 400 square metre plot of land at the same site where a Ravidas temple was demolished in August. The top court also ordered the release of people arrested for protesting the demolition.
DIGITAL MEDIA: The Union government on Monday said it will finalise and also notify rules for social media and digital media platforms by January 2020. The rules on the so-called intermediary liability — many digital platforms, including Facebook and WhatsApp, insist they are intermediaries and can’t regulate content — become important in the context of tackling hate speech, fake news, and other unlawful activities. The draft rules are ready, the government told the Supreme Court, but these need to be discussed with other ministries and also vetted by the law ministry.
DEFENCE: The Defence Research and Development (DRDO) has started work to produce a hypersonic weapon – missiles that travel at five times speed of sound, or a little over a mile every second. A wind tunnel to test and fine tune the technology will be operational soon
RBI: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has told its subsidiary Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation (DICGC) to create a risk-based system for collecting premiums from banks to cover the deposit insurance of customers. It steps in to raise deposit insurance cover for customers from existing Rs 100,000.
ARREY COLONY: The Supreme Court on Monday said it is not stopping the construction of Metro shed project in Mumbai’s prominent green lung Aarey Colony, where protests were held against cutting of trees for the work. A bench of justices Arun Mishra and Deepak Gupta sought a status report with pictures on plantation, transplantation and felling of trees in Aarey colony area of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

SIACHEN: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh announces that the Siachen area is now open for tourists and tourism. “From Siachen Base Camp to Kumar Post, entire area has been opened for tourism purposes,” the union minister announced.

THAILAND: Thailand’s king has stripped his royal consort of her titles and military ranks for disloyalty, accusing her of seeking to undermine the position of his official wife, the country’s queen, for her own benefit. The royal command by 67-year-old King Maha Vajiralongkorn, made public Monday, came just three months after he granted 34-year-old Sineenatra Wongvajirabhakdi the consort title, reviving an old palace tradition of taking a junior wife.
SYRIA: The United States bombed its military base with landing facilities for transport aircraft in the Tal Baydar settlement close to the town of Tal Tamr, where fighting between the US-backed Kurdish forces and the Turkish army is underway, the Syrian Arab News Agency reported. The US troops are currently preparing to abandon another base in Al-Hasakah near As-Sabheyeh dam.
