যাহাতে অচৈতন্য শয্যাগত হইয়া পড়িয়াছিলাম, তাহা বসন্ত নয়, অন্য জ্বর। ডাক্তারি-শাস্ত্রে নিশ্চয়ই তাহার একটা-কিছু গালভরা শক্ত নাম ছিল, কিন্তু আমি তাহা অবগত নই। খবর পাইয়া পিয়ারী তাহার ছেলেকে লইয়া জন-দুই ভৃত্য এবং দাসী লইয়া আসিয়া উপস্থিত হয়। সেই দিনই একটা বাসা ভাড়া করিয়া আমাকে স্থানান্তরিত করে এবং শহরের ভাল-মন্দ নানাবিধ চিকিৎসক জড় করিয়া ফেলে। ভালই করিয়াছিল। না হইলে অন্য ক্ষতি না হোক, ‘ভারতবর্ষে’র পাঠক-পাঠিকার ধৈর্য্যের মহিমাটা সংসারে অবিদিত থাকিয়া যাইত।

ভোরবেলা পিয়ারী কহিল, বঙ্কু, আর দেরি করিস্ নে বাবা, এই-বেলা একখানা সেকেণ্ড ক্লাস গাড়ী রিজার্ভ ক’রে আয়। আমি একদণ্ডও এখানে রাখ্তে সাহস করি নে।
As soon as it was dawn Piari said, ‘Banku, don’t be late, my son; go and reserve a second-class compartment for us. I dare not keep him here another hour.’
বঙ্কুর অতৃপ্ত নিদ্রা তখন দুচক্ষু জড়াইয়া ছিল; সে মুদ্রিত-নেত্রে অব্যক্ত-স্বরে জবাব দিল, তুমি খেপেচ মা, এ অবস্থায় কি নাড়ানাড়ি করা যায়?
Banku’s eyes were still heavy with sleep. Without opening them he drawled, ‘What nonsense, Mother. How can he be moved in this condition?’
পিয়ারী একটু হাসিয়া কহিল, আগে তুই উঠে চোখে মুখে জল দে দেখি; তার পরে নাড়ানাড়ির কথা বোঝা যাবে। লক্ষ্মী বাপ আমার, ওঠ্।
‘Get up first, Banku,’ said Piari, with a slight laughing. ‘After you’ve done that and have had your wash, I will discuss the question of moving him. Do be a good boy and get up, my son.’
বঙ্কু অগত্যা শয্যা ত্যাগ করিয়া, মুখ হাত ধুইয়া কাপড় ছাড়িয়া ষ্টেশনে চলিয়া গেল। তখন সবেমাত্র সকাল হইতেছিল—ঘরে আর কেহ ছিল না। ধীরে ডাকিলাম, পিয়ারী! আমার শিয়রের দিকে আর একখানা খাটিয়া জোড়া দেওয়া ছিল। তাহারই উপর ক্লান্তিবশতঃ বোধ করি সে ইতিমধ্যে একটুখানি চোখ বুজিয়া শুইয়াছিল। ধড়-মড় করিয়া উঠিয়া বসিয়া আমার মুখের উপর ঝুঁকিয়া পড়িল। কোমলকণ্ঠে জিজ্ঞাসা করিল, ঘুম ভাঙ্ল?
Accordingly Banku left his bed, had his morning wash, dressed, and went to the station. The morning was just breaking, and there was no one else in the room. I called in a low voice, ‘Piari’. Another cot had been placed at the head of my bed and on it Piari lay half-asleep, worn out by her long vigil as I presumed. At the sound of my voice she sat up with a start and bent over me. ‘So you are awake,’ she said softly.
আমি ত জেগেই আছি। পিয়ারী উৎকণ্ঠিত যত্নের সহিত আমার মাথায়, কপালে হাত বুলাইয়া দিতে দিতে কহিল, জ্বর এখন খুব কম। একটুখানি চোখ বুজে ঘুমোবার চেষ্টা কর না কেন?
‘I have been awake for quite some time.’ Piari passed her hand with anxious care over my head and brow, and said, ‘There is hardly any fever now. Why don’t you try to sleep a little?’
তা ত বরাবরই কর্চি পিয়ারী! আজ জ্বর আমার কদিন হ’ল? ‘I have been doing the same, Piari. How long have I had this fever?’
তেরো দিন, বলিয়া সে কতই যেন একটা বর্ষীয়সী প্রবীণার মত গম্ভীরভাবে কহিল, দেখ, ছেলেপিলেদের সাম্নে আর আমাকে ও ব’লে ডেকো না। চিরকাল লক্ষ্মী ব’লে ডেকেচ, তাই কেন বল না?
Thirteen days.’ She immediately became grave, and said with a seriousness worthy of an elderly matron, ‘Please don’t call me by that name before the boys. You have always called me Lakshmi; why don’t you call me by using the same ?’
দিন-দুই হইতেই পূর্ণ সচেতন ছিলাম। আমার সমস্ত কথাই স্মরণ হইয়াছিল। বলিলাম, আচ্ছা। তারপরে যাহা বলিবার জন্য ডাকিয়াছিলাম, মনে মনে সেই কথাগুলি একটু গুছাইয়া লইয়া বলিলাম, আমাকে নিয়ে যাবার চেষ্টা কর্চ, কিন্তু তোমাকে অনেক কষ্ট দিয়েছি, আর দিতে চাইনে।
I had recovered my normal consciousness two days before; I remembered the incidents of the last two days, ‘All right,’ I said. Then recalling the subject I had wanted to discuss with her, ‘you are trying to move me, but I have given you a lot of trouble already, and I don’t want to give you any more.’
তবে কি কর্তে চাও? ‘What do you want to do then?’
আমি ভাবছি এখন যেমন আছি, তাতে তিন-চারদিনেই বোধ হয় একরকম সেরে যাবো। তোমরা বরঞ্চ এই কটা দিন অপেক্ষা ক’রে বাড়ী যাও।
I think that if I remain here as I am I shall be all right in three or four days more. You had better stay here these few days and then go home.’
তখন তুমি কি করবে শুনি? ‘What will you do then, if I may ask?’
সে যা হয় একটা হবে।’ Something or other.’
তা হবে, বলিয়া পিয়ারী একটুখানি হাসিল। তার পর সুমুখে উঠিয়া আসিয়া খাটের একটা বাজুর উপর বসিয়া, আমার মুখের দিকে ক্ষণকাল চুপ করিয়া চাহিয়া থাকিয়া, আবার একটু হাসিয়া কহিল, তিন-চারদিনে না হোক্ দশ-বারোদিনে এ রোগ সার্বে তা জানি, কিন্তু আসল রোগটা কতদিনে সারবে, আমাকে বল্তে পারো?
‘Probably,’ rejoined Piari with a smile. Then she rose and seated herself on the edge of my cot. She gazed at me for a few moments and then, smiling again, said, ‘I know this fever will be cured in eight or ten days, if not in three or four, as you say. But will you tell me when you will be cured of your real malady?’
আসল রোগ আবার কি? ‘My real malady? And what may that be, pray?’
পিয়ারী কহিল, ভাব্বে একরকম, বল্বে একরকম, কর্বে আর একরকম—চিরকাল ঐ এক রোগ।

তুমি জানো যে একমাসের আগে তোমাকে চোখের আড়াল কর্তে পার্ব না—তবু বল্বে—তোমাকে কষ্ট দিলুম, তুমি যাও।
You know as well as I do that I shan’t consider you fit to take care of yourself for at least a month, and yet you must say, “I’ve given you such a lot of trouble, leave me!”

When I came, I found you lying unconscious on a rotten, old mattress laid on the bare ground, your head covered with long hair that was matted with dirt and dust, all your body tricked out with beads, and two brass bangles decorating your wrists.
মা গো মা! দেখে কেঁদে বাঁচিনে! বলিতে বলিতেই উদ্বেল অশ্রুজল তাহার দুই চোখ ভরিয়া টল টল করিয়া উঠিল। হাত দিয়া তাড়াতাড়ি মুছিয়া ফেলিয়া কহিল, বঙ্কু বলে, ইনি কে মা?
O my God, how could I help crying when I saw you in such a state!’ As she spoke her eyes filled with tears. She wiped them quickly away with her hand and continued, ‘Banku asked me, “Who is this, mother?”
মনে মনে বল্লুম, তুই ছেলে, তোর কাছে সে কথা আর কি বল্ব বাবা! উঃ, কি বিপদের দিনই সে দিনটা গেছে। I said it in my mind………Oh, what a dreadful day that was!
মাইরি, কি শুভক্ষণেই পাঠশালে দুজনের চার চক্ষু দেখা হয়েছিল! যে দুঃখটা তুমি আমাকে দিলে, এত দুঃখ ভূ-ভারতে কেউ কখনো কাউকে দেয় নি—দেবে না! সহরের মধ্যে বসন্ত দেখা দিয়েছে—সবাইকে নিয়ে ভালোয় ভালোয় পালাতে পার্লে যে বাঁচি! বলিয়া সে একটা দীর্ঘশ্বাস ত্যাগ করিল।
