Nationwide Call to Surrender Zombie-Style Knives and Machetes in the United Kingdom
In response to the concerning prevalence of zombie-style knives and machetes, the government has initiated a nationwide effort to encourage individuals to safely and legally hand over these dangerous weapons before they are officially banned from our streets. As of 24 September 2024, the possession of zombie-style knives and machetes will be illegal, adding to the list of prohibited items that includes other weapons such as butterfly knives, Samurai swords, and push daggers.
To facilitate the surrender of these weapons, a scheme will be in operation at police stations across England and Wales from 26 August to 23 September. Individuals may also avail of safe, surrender bins or contact local authorities or anti-knife crime charities to explore alternative options for disposal. Following the 24th of September, possession of a zombie-style knife or machete will carry legal consequences, including potential imprisonment.
Policing Minister Diana Johnson emphasized the unnecessary risk posed by these weapons, stating that there is no legitimate need for such items in homes or on the streets. The comprehensive plan to address knife crime also entails the forthcoming prohibition of ninja swords, as part of a concerted effort to reduce knife crime by 50% within the next decade.
In the pursuit of a safer environment and a brighter future for the younger generations, public cooperation is essential. Individuals in possession of these weapons are encouraged to consult government guidance for details on designated police stations and the proper procedures for surrendering these items.
This initiative forms only a fraction of the government’s commitment to combat knife crime effectively, with additional measures such as further bans, stringent regulations on online sales, and targeted interventions to prevent youth involvement in criminal activities in the pipeline.
