Lesson 11 of 20: Commands, Polite Requests & Getting Things Done

After today you’ll be able to:

• tell someone “Come here!”, “Sit down!”, “Wait!”
• ask politely “Could you help me?”, “Can you call a taxi?”
• book tickets, ask for help, give instructions like a local

1. Imperative – direct commands (for friends & family)

Quick real-life uses:

• Έλα γρήγορα!
• Κάτσε δίπλα μου.
• Περίμενε με έξω από το μετρό.

2. Polite requests (the magic formula)

Use: Μπορείτε να + verb … παρακαλώ; or: Θα μπορούσατε να + verb …;

3. Booking tickets & transport (real phrases)

4. Mini real-life situations (practise these!)

Situation 1 – Pharmacy You: Καλησπέρα! Μπορείτε να μου δώσετε κάτι για τον πονοκέφαλο; Pharmacist: Βεβαίως, Depon ή Panadol; You: Depon, παρακαλώ. Πόσο κάνει;

Situation 2 – Taxi You: Μπορείτε να με πάτε στο Σύνταγμα; Driver: Βεβαίως, ανεβαίνετε! You: Πόσο περίπου θα κάνει; Driver: Γύρω στα 12 ευρώ.

Situation 3 – Hotel reception You: Καλημέρα! Θα μπορούσατε να μας καλέσετε ταξί για το αεροδρόμιο στις 6 το πρωί; Reception: Φυσικά, το έχω σημειώσει.

6. Homework (10–12 min)

1. Give 5 direct commands to a friend and 5 polite requests to a stranger. Example: Direct: Κάτσε! Φέρε νερό! Polite: Μπορείτε να μου δείξετε το δρόμο για το μετρό, παρακαλώ;
2. Book (in Greek) a table for 4 people tomorrow at 20:30 and a taxi for 07:00 the day after.
3. Record yourself asking for help in 3 different situations (hotel, shop, street).

When you’re ready, just say “Lesson 12” and we’ll learn:

• Daily routine & reflexives (“I wake up, I get dressed…”)
• The verbs “I like to”, “I start”, “I finish”
• Telling time with “at 8”, “from 9 to 5”, etc.
