Lesson 7 of 20: My / Your / His stuff, Shopping & Prices, and the Genitive Case

After today, you’ll be able to:

• say “my brother”, “Maria’s car”, “the beach of Santorini”
• go shopping, ask prices, and bargain a tiny bit
• understand menus and signs that say “the coffee of the house”

1. Possessive pronouns (super easy in Greek!)

You just put them AFTER the noun (opposite of English!):

• ο αδερφός μου → my brother
• η φίλη σου → your friend
• το σπίτι τους → their house
• το αυτοκίνητο της Μαρίας → Maria’s car

2. Genitive case – “of” (only the articles change)

Examples:

• το βιβλίο του Γιάννη → Yiannis’s book
• η παραλία της Σαντορίνης → the beach of Santorini
• τα κλειδιά των παιδιών → the children’s keys

3. Shopping & prices – the phrases you’ll use 100 times

Real-life mini-dialogue in a shop: You: Καλημέρα! Πόσο κάνει αυτό το μαγιό; Seller: Τριάντα πέντε ευρώ. You: Μμμ… είναι λίγο ακριβό. Έχετε κάτι πιο φτηνό; Seller: Ναι, αυτό εδώ είναι είκοσι οκτώ. You: Ωραίο! Το παίρνω. Με κάρτα γίνεται; Seller: Βέβαια!

4. Put everything together – describing possessions

• Το σπίτι μου είναι μικρό αλλά πολύ ωραίο.
• Η τσάντα της Ελένης είναι καινούργια και ακριβή.
• Τα παπούτσια του άντρα μου είναι πάντα βρώμικα!
• Ο καφές του καφενείου είναι ο καλύτερος της πόλης.

5. Vocabulary (15 shopping & possession words)

1. τα λεφτά ta lef-TAH money
2. η τιμή ee tee-MEE price
3. η έκπτωση ee EHK-to-see discount/sale
4. το μέγεθος to MEH-geh-thos size
5. το χρώμα to KHRO-ma colour
6. μαύρο MAV-ro black
7. άσπρο AS-pro white
8. κόκκινο KO-kee-no red
9. μπλε BLEH blue
10. κίτρινο KEE-tree-no yellow
11. το κατάστημα to ka-TAS-tee-ma shop

15. δικό μου thee-KO moo mine (literally “my own”)

6. Homework (10–12 minutes)

1. Write/say 8 sentences using possessive + genitive: Example: «Το τηλέφωνο της φίλης μου είναι καινούργιο.»
2. Pretend you’re in 3 different shops. Ask the price of 3 things and decide to buy one (in Greek).
3. Record yourself: «Έχω δύο αδέρφια. Ο αδερφός μου μένει στην Αθήνα, το σπίτι του είναι μεγάλο και ωραίο. Η αδερφή μου μένει με τους γονείς μας. Το δωμάτιό της είναι πάντα τακτοποιημένο.»

• How to talk about yesterday / last weekend / your last trip to Greece
• The most common irregular past verbs
