অনেকক্ষণ পর্য্যন্ত নাবিকেরা নিশ্চেষ্ট হইয়া রহিল। যাত্রীরা ভয়ে কণ্ঠাগত প্রাণ। বেশী বাতাস নাই। সুতরাং তাঁহারা তরঙ্গান্দোলনকম্প বড় জানিতে পারিলেন না। তথাপি সকলেই মৃত্যু নিকট নিশ্চিত করিলেন। পুরুষেরা নিঃশব্দে দুর্গানাম জপ করিতে লাগিলেন, স্ত্রীলোকেরা সুর তুলিয়া বিবিধ শব্দবিন্যাসে কাঁদিতে লাগিল। একটি স্ত্রীলোক গঙ্গাসাগরে সন্তান বিসর্জ্জন করিয়া আসিয়াছিল, ছেলে জলে দিয়া আর তুলিতে পারে নাই, – সেই কেবল কাঁদিল না।
All boathands sat stockstill. The passengers ate their hearts out in an agony of suspense. The wind blew a gentle sigh. The shake of the boat was scarcely felt on account of the smooth glassy sea. However, they felt sure that their last hour had struck. Silently did men say their prayers and loudly did women raise a babel of cries uttered in vocal contortions of different keys. One of them had given a watery grave to her babe in the deep water of the Bay—she had dropped her child but could not rescue it—she of all others did not weep.
প্রতীক্ষা করিতে করিতে অনুভবে বেলা প্রায় এক প্রহর হইল। এমত সময়ে অকস্মাৎ নাবিকেরা দরিয়ার পাঁচ পীরের নাম কীর্ত্তিত করিয়া মহাকোলাহল করিয়া উঠিল। যাত্রীরা সকলেই জিজ্ঞাসা করিয়া উঠিল, “কি! কি! মাঝি, কি হইয়াছে?” মাঝিরাও একবাক্যে কোলাহল করিয়া কহিতে লাগিল, “রোদ উঠেছে! ঐ দেখ ডাঙা!” যাত্রীরা সকলেই ঔৎসুক্যসহকারে নৌকার বাহিরে আসিয়া কোথায় আসিয়াছেন, কি বৃত্তান্ত, দেখিতে লাগিলেন। দেখিলেন, সূর্য্যপ্রকাশ হইয়াছে। কুজ্ঝটিকার অন্ধকাররাশি হইতে দিঙ্মণ্ডল একেবারে বিমুক্ত হইয়াছে। বেলা প্রায় প্রহরাতীত হইয়াছে। যে স্থানে নৌকা আসিয়াছে, সে প্রকৃত মহাসমুদ্র নহে, নদীর মোহানা মাত্র, কিন্তু তথায় নদীর যেরূপ বিস্তার, সেরূপ বিস্তার আর কোথাও নাই। নদীর এক কূল নৌকার অতি নিকটবর্ত্তী বটে, – এমন কি, পঞ্চাশৎ হস্তের মধ্যগত, কিন্তু অপর কূলের চিহ্ন দেখা যায় না। আর যে দিকেই দেখা যায়, অনন্ত জলরাশি চঞ্চল রবিরশ্মিমালাপ্রদীপ্ত হইয়া গগনপ্রান্তে গগনসহিত মিশিয়াছে। নিকটস্থ জল, সচরাচর সকর্দ্দম নদীজলবর্ণ; কিন্তু দূরস্থ বারিরাশি নীলপ্রভ। আরোহীরা নিশ্চিত সিদ্ধান্ত করিলেন যে, তাঁহারা মহাসমুদ্রে আসিয়া পড়িয়াছেন; তবে সৌভাগ্য এই যে, উপকূল নিকটে, আশঙ্কার বিষয় নাই।
While in this nervous mood of expectancy, they guessed it to be nine o’clock. At that time the crew all on a sudden shouted out at the top of their lungs the names of the five Pirs of water and kicked up a row. All on board burst in one voice “What, what is up?” All the boathands cried out in a chorus “The sun has appeared. Land ahoy.” Every body crawled out into the open space and began to observe the locality and the surroundings. They saw the sun had come out and the mist rolled away like a curtain before the sun revealing all sides in their naked clearness. The sun shone pretty above the horizon line. The water on which the boat floated was not the sea but the estuary of a river though the same expanse was scarcely observable any where else. One side of the river was within easy reach—it was twenty-five yards more or less from where the boat lay. But the coast-line was hardly visible on the opposite side. Every other way besides, shimmered the wild waste of water in the glare of the brilliant sun and sweeping off immeasurably melted into the misty sky-line. The adjacent water had a turbid appearance as is usually noticeable in river water though the same looked blue at a distance. They felt certain that they had drifted down into the deep blue sea. But by some stroke of good luck they were pretty near the land. So they screwed up some courage.
সূর্য্যপ্রতি দৃষ্টি করিয়া দিক্ নিরূপিত করিলেন। সম্মুখে যে উপকূল দেখিতেছিলেন, সে সহজেই সমুদ্রের পশ্চিম তট বলিয়া সিদ্ধান্ত হইল। তটমধ্যে নৌকার অনতিদূরে এক নদীর মুখ মন্দগামী কলধৌতপ্রবাহবৎ আসিয়া পড়িতেছিল। সঙ্গমস্থলে দক্ষিণ পার্শ্বে বৃহৎ সৈকতভূমিখণ্ডে নানাবিধ পক্ষিগণ অগণিত সংখ্যায় ক্রীড়া করিতেছিল। এই নদী এক্ষণে “রসুলপুরের নদী” নাম ধারণ করিয়াছে।
They calculated the direction from the sun’s position. The fringe of the frontal ground was easily concluded to be the western seaboard. At a close range from where the boat floated was the mouth of another river pouring its gurgling flow of gold into the channel. Innumerable water-birds of diverse description were playing joyously on the broad patch of sand that lay on the southern side of the estuary. This stream now takes the name of the Rasulpur river.
