PM Modi’s call to Nepal’s new leader emphasizes condolences, support for peace, stability, and stronger India-Nepal ties during the transition
Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a telephone conversation with Mrs. Sushila Karki, Prime Minister of the Interim Government of Nepal, on September 18, 2025. He congratulated her on her appointment, extended best wishes on behalf of the Government and people of India, and conveyed heartfelt condolences for the tragic loss of more than 74 lives during recent protests in Nepal. He reaffirmed India’s readiness to work closely with Nepal to strengthen the special ties between the two countries, while offering full support for Nepal’s efforts to restore peace, stability, and progress for its people.
Prime Minister Karki expressed gratitude for India’s firm support and shared the desire to deepen bilateral relations. Prime Minister Modi also extended warm felicitations on the occasion of Nepal’s upcoming National Day. Both leaders agreed to remain in touch.
Nepal, recovering from political upheaval and instability, faces challenges from elements seeking to disrupt peace. India’s outreach at this sensitive moment underlines the importance of stability in the Himalayan neighbour, which has always shared deep cultural and historical bonds with India. By making this her first international call as Prime Minister, Sushila Karki signaled her intent to prioritize relations with India.
