0–2 minutes: The Alphabet (Essentials Only)
Greek has 24 letters. Here are the ones you’ll use most:
Α α — a as in father
Ε ε — e as in met
Η η — i as in machine
Ι ι — i as in machine
Ο ο — o as in soft “o”
Υ υ — i/u (varies, often like “ee”)
Ω ω — ō long “o”
Ν ν — n
Μ μ — m
Σ σ/ς — s
Ρ ρ — r (rolled lightly)
2–5 minutes: Basic Phrases
Hello: Γεια (Ya)
Good morning: Καλημέρα (Kaliméra)
Good evening: Καλησπέρα (Kalispéra)
Please / You’re welcome: Παρακαλώ (Parakaló)
Thank you: Ευχαριστώ (Efharistó)
Yes: Ναι (Ne)
No: Όχι (Óhi)
How are you?: Τι κάνεις; (Ti kánis?)
I’m fine: Καλά (Kalá)
5–8 minutes: Pronouns
I — εγώ (egó)
You — εσύ (esý)
He — αυτός (aftós)
She — αυτή (aftí)
We — εμείς (emís)
They — αυτοί/αυτές (aftí/aftés)
8–12 minutes: Basic Grammar
1. Greek is very regular. Verbs follow patterns.
Example: είμαι (I am)
- I am — είμαι (íme)
- You are — είσαι (ísai)
- He/She is — είναι (íne)
2. Articles work like “the”
Masculine: ο
Feminine: η
Neuter: το
Examples:
ο φίλος — the friend (male)
η μέρα — the day
το παιδί — the child
12–15 minutes: Build Simple Sentences
I am Maria.
Είμαι η Μαρία. (Íme i María.)
You are a student.
Είσαι μαθητής / μαθήτρια. (Ísai mathitís / mathítria.)
I want water.
Θέλω νερό. (Thélo neró.)
I speak a little Greek.
Μιλάω λίγα ελληνικά. (Miláo líga elliniká.)
