Japan’s New Prime Minister Reportedly Plans to Nominate U.S. President for Nobel Peace Prize
TOKYO, October 28 — Japan’s new Prime Minister, Sanae Takaichi, reportedly intends to nominate U.S. President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize for the year 2026, Japan’s Nippon TV reported on Monday.
According to the broadcaster, Takaichi plans to convey her intention directly to the American leader during their first official meeting, which is scheduled to take place in Tokyo on Tuesday. The reported nomination would mark one of Takaichi’s earliest diplomatic gestures since assuming office, signaling Tokyo’s desire to sustain strong ties with Washington amid a tense global security environment.
For the year 2025, the Norwegian Nobel Committee has awarded the Nobel Peace Prize to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado. In a post on X, the committee said it was honoring Machado “for her tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela and for her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.”
President Trump, who was nominated this year by Pakistan, narrowly missed out on the prestigious recognition. He has often asserted that his foreign policy achievements merit the Peace Prize and recently joked that he hoped to receive it “next year.”
Neither the Japanese government nor the White House has released an official statement regarding Takaichi’s reported plans.
