The Supreme Court today sought the Centre’s response by November 5 on a plea seeking entry of Muslim women in mosques across the country and claiming that such restriction was “unconstitutional” and violative of fundamental rights to life, equality and gender justice. The bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi took note of the fact that it had issued notices to parties, which included union ministries of Women and Child Welfare and Law and Justice and Minority Affairs and the National Commission for Women, in April and three respondents have not been served with its notices. The bench, also comprising justices S A Bobde and S A Nazeer, ordered that the notices along with copies of the petition be served on the Maharashtra State Board of Wakf, Central Wakf Council and All India Muslim Personal Law Board.
The Chandigarh Consumer Forum has directed a Dehradun based company to pay an amount of Rs 11,040 to a Chandigarh resident for allegedly selling a non-functional ‘battery powered penis pump’ to him. The amount includes the refund of the equipment, litigation charges and compensation. “The harassment suffered by the Complainant is also writ large. The Opposite Parties (Extender India) have certainly and definitely indulged into unfair trade practice as they ought to have initiate steps to redress the grievance of the Complainant promptly, which they failed to do and rather propelled this unwarranted, uncalled for litigation upon the Complainant,” said a three-member bench of the district Consumer Disputes Redressal Form. J&K : Girish Chandra Murmu, who has been appointed as the first Lieutenant Governor of the proposed Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, is a senior Indian Administrative Services (IAS) officer from the Gujarat cadre belonging to the 1985 batch. Murmu, who will replace incumbent J&K Governor Satya Pal Malik, is presently serving as the Expenditure Secretary in the Union Finance Ministry.
HARYANA: The BJP today finalised an alliance with the Jannayak Janata Party, which has won 10 seats in the 90-member assembly, by offering it the post of deputy chief minister. BJP president Amit Shah announced at a press conference held with JJP leader Dushyant Chautala that the chief minister will be from his party and the deputy chief minister from the regional party.

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro said on Thursday that the South American nation will drop its requirement that visiting Chinese and Indian tourists or businesspeople obtain visas. Earlier this year, the Brazilian government ended visa requirements for tourists and businesspeople from the United States, Canada, Japan and Australia. Those countries, however, have not in return dropped their visa requirements for Brazilian citizens.

Tata Mutual Fund (MF) has moved the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) seeking repayment of over Rs 120 crore of dues from Dewan Housing Finance Corporation (DHFL). Industry insiders say the slow pace of progress on the inter-creditor agreement (ICA) may prompt other MFs to also take the legal route to recover their dues. Among other fund houses, Nippon India MF, Edelweiss Asset Management Company (AMC), Kotak AMC and Axis AMC have moved the Bombay High Court to recover dues.
