Syama Prasad Mookerjee: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday rechristened Kolkata Port Trust after Jan Sangh founder Syama Prasad Mookerjee.”I announce that the Kolkata Port Trust will now be known as Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port. He was the father of industrialisation in India, a man who made sacrifices for one nation and one Constitution,” Modi said, while addressing the ceremony at Netaji Indoor Stadium in Kolkata.
US airbase attacked-Iraq’s Al Balad airbase, hosting US troops has been attacked by four rockets on Sunday evening, news agency AFP reported quoting military sources. The sources informed AFP that the attack on the airbase, which is situated north of Baghdad, has resulted in injuries to four Iraqi airmen. Till Irane hasn`t taken the responsibility of the attack. On the other hand as protests flared up in Tehran following Iran’s admission that its forces errantly downed a Ukrainian jet, reversing three days of denial, United States President Donald Trump warned the Islamic Republic not to kill the protesters or stifle their agitation.
Militant killed: Three “most wanted” Hizbul Mujahideen militants, including commander Hamad Khan, were killed in an encounter with security forces on Sunday in Tral in Pulwama district, J&K Police said. The terrorists — Umer Fayaz Lone alias “Hamad Khan” of Seer village, Faizan Hamid of Mandoora and Adil Bashir Mir alias “Abu Dujana” of Monghama — were wanted for their complicity in terror crimes, including attacks on security establishments and civilian atrocities, police said in a statement.
Cong to Army: Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury Sunday made a jibe at the new Army chief, General M M Naravane, advising him to “Talk Less, Work More”. “@ New Army Chief, Parliament already had adopted unanimous resolution on #POK in 1994, Govt is at liberty to take action and may give direction. Shah to protesters: Addressing a rally in Madhya Pradesh’s Jabalpur Union Home Minister Amit Shah Sunday said those who indulge in anti-national sloganeering belongs in jail. Shah said: “Some students raised anti-national slogans in JNU saying, ‘Bharat tere tukde ho ek hazaar, Inshallah, Inshallah’. Shouldn’t they be sent to jail? Anybody who raises anti-national slogans belongs in jail.” He also promised to build grand Ram Temple in Ayodhya within four months.
No flight operation: No flight operations will take place for around an-hour-and-45-minutes at the Delhi International Airport on January 18, 20-24 and 26 — due to the Republic Day celebrations. According to a notice to airmen (NOTAM) issued by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) on Sunday, “no landing and take off” would be “permitted” at Delhi International Airport between 10.35 am and 12.15 pm on January 18, 20-24 and 26, due to “Republic Day Celebrations”.
NSG covers withdrawn: The Union government has decided to remove NSG commandos from 13 top ‘Z+’ category VIPs that entails about two dozen personnel for each one of them. NSG protects Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, ex-CMs Mayawati, Mulayam Singh, Chandrababu Naidu, Parkash Singh Badal and Farooq Abdullah, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, BJP leader and former Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani. Former PM Manmohan Singh and his wife, Congress President Sonia Gandhi and her children Priyanka and Rahul and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla are under protection of CRPF.
DSP arrested: The Jammu-Kashmir police on Sunday confirmed the involvement of one of its senior officers in terrorism and said that he will be dealt with “as a terrorist”. Deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Davinder Singh was arrested along with three other persons on Saturday including Hizbul Mujahideen’s second-in-command , said Kashmir’s inspector general of police Vijay Kumar.
RK Mission on CAA: The Ramakrishna Math and Mission on Sunday distanced itself from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s remarks on the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, contending that it was a strictly apolitical body which did not respond to ‘ephemeral’ calls. The prime minister, during his address at Belur Math — the headquarters of Ramakrishna Mission — said that the new law would not take away anybody’s citizenship, and a section of the youth was being misguided about the Citizenship (Amendment) Act or CAA.
Renamimg Victoria memorial: In a tweet senior BJP leader Subramanian Swamy said: “I welcome Namo’s statement in Kolkata that History, as we know, should be reviewed. He should implement that statement by re-naming Victoria Memorial as Rani Jhansi Smarak Mahal. Queen Victoria took over India after the betrayal of Rani Jhansi in 1857 and looted India for 90 years”.
